Norwegian rock band The Flash Gordons have a new look and sound with two recent additions to the band, and they have put their skills on full display with their latest track titled “Euphoria.”

“I made it during the Covid period when we were isolated,” said founding member Thomas Hofstad, who writes the lyrics and music, and provides vocals on the track. “This song is about not getting what you want or still waiting for something.”

The new single is part of the album Egypt’s Eye, which was mixed and produced by Trond Holter. Holter has worked with the likes of WigWam and Jorn on releasing music that has achieved international success.

It was recorded in Hofstad’s home studio in Norway and all the instruments on the track were recorded by Hofstad, himself. The album totals 11 tracks and the songs range from those with a hard edge like “In the Dawn of the Dead” to tunes like “Haters” that have a garage rock vibe, and also ballads like “Inside the Glass.”

“The songs vary from almost pop-like to pretty hard on this album,” Hofstad said, and added that it is “dynamic and heavy.”

The alternative rock group consists of consists of Hofstad on vocals, Andreas Edvardsen on guitar and backing vocals and Trond Jakobsen on bass, along with the recent additions of Ken Zahl on drums and Orjan Pleym on guitar. Hofstad praised the input of the newest members, saying they have risen to the occasion.

“It’s kind of a brand new lineup,” he said. “Our new drummer is experienced, and is a hard hitting drummer with a lot of groove. Our new guitarist is really good on the effects.”

This is the sixth album for The Flash Gordons over nearly two decades of playing, and not only is it the first with the new lineup, it has a vastly different sound. Previous records had more of an indie sound, and this is far more polished. Hofstad is proud of the new material he put out and said that it has taken plenty of work and progress.

“This record is much darker than earlier songs and records,” he said. “In the world there is war, and all this shit happening, I wanted to make music that fits the situation we are in. It’s not a happy album, really, but the lyrics are beautiful. It is beautiful, but also dark.”

Hofstad noted that the production quality of the record is top notch, and described it as a “modern hard rock sound.” He is inspired by the likes of Beck, Tool, Black Sabbath and Neil Young, and he uses what he gets from their music to help mold his musical taste and the product he puts out. He is drawn by their vibes, but also life experiences that cross his path on a daily basis.

“I try to get my own personal print on it,” he said.

The Flash Gordons have plans of touring after the record is released, playing festivals and other spots in Europe. “Euphoria” is available on all platforms on February 9, and Egypt’s Eye is scheduled to be released on February 23.
