From producing to writing, Australian musician Alex Mathers demonstrates his versatility and skill in his latest single, “That Summer.” The country singer has come a long way from his days producing for other artists. His fresh single and new record deal with After Platinum Media Group earns Mather his turn in the spotlight and a standing ovation to boot.
From the first notes, “That Summer” draws listeners straight into its simultaneously upbeat and calming vibe. Alex Mather delivers smooth vocals with a touch of grit necessary for the emotionality of country legends. “My inspiration for the song was going back to a summer you spent with a loved one or family,” tells Mather. “Music is a way to keep memories alive and play them over and over again. This song takes you back to that special summer with a certain person.”
Since its debut, the “That Summer” has received great feedback. “I was scared and nervous to hear what people had to say, but the feedback’s been incredible,” shares Mathers. “People told me that before they saw the video clip they could see themselves on a beach. The video ended up being just as they had envisioned.”
The video for “That Summer” has since been picked up by major outlets near and far. From a Vevo highlight to country radio in Australia to a feature in Spotify’s “Fresh Country Playlist,” “That Summer” is quickly gaining momentum in the music scene.
Before becoming a singer-songwriter in his own right, Alex Mather focused his talent on producing and writing songs for other artists in the pop space. Growing up, Mather listened to country with his parents. When country came calling later in life, Mather once again listened and began to write.
When he started developing music of his own, Mather turned to TikTok and YouTube to share what he was working on. Soon enough, his music began to take off and he transitioned from background—producing for other people—to being the spotlight of his own accord.
“That Summer” was written with After Platinum’s CEO, Ernie Romero, as a back-and-forth project between the two. “Ernie sent me an idea that was kind of set in a verse. As soon as I heard it, I thought ‘no way this is the chorus’ and moved his verse to the chorus. I then mumble jumbled stuff and sent that back. He sent his part back. It was a very back and forth process.” Despite the intricate exchange, the song only took two days to complete.
“I’m proud of my growth into songwriting. It’s super important to me. At first, I started writing gibberish but now lyrics mean something,” shares Mather of the process.
This year, Alex Mather is planning for a steady stream of music to be dropped every 6–8 weeks. He is also in the midst of booking tour dates. “I want listeners to know that there is a lot of music coming,” shares Mather. “It’s not just one single, then six months later you’re wondering what I’m doing. Much more is coming. My favorite thing is when artists have so much music there’s 50 other songs you can love even if you don’t love one song.”
