Indie Pop guitarist, singer and songwriter Nate Sperl recently released a new single titled “Wednesday” that in a one-on-one interview, he calls a “slice of life relationship song” that he feels can generate a number of different feelings.

The new single, “Wednesday,” touches on aspects of personal relationships in the lyrics, but Sperl said he also tries to keep it casual and palatable for his listeners. He noted that it is a tune you can just turn on, listen to, and can feel happy or sad depending on the listener's mood. “The song is totally interchangeable emotion wise” Sperl stated. Emotion is huge for him in his music, and Sperl tries to put existentialism at the forefront of his tracks. He wants listeners to be able to relate to the music. “I don’t want my music to necessarily be about myself always,” said Sperl. “I want people to be able to listen and be like, ‘I can relate to this and this makes me feel good.’ I want people to feel something for themselves. I really appreciate it when I can do that. That’s kind of my goal because that’s what it does for me.”

He explained the creative process for this song, saying that it started with a basic chord progression. “There are sounds where they need to be and sounds where there’s not, starting with three basic chords and going off,” Sperl said. “There are kind of different licks and harmonics in the background, as well, that all kind of compound on each other slowly. From a sound perspective, I tried to make it as tight as possible”.

In general, if Sperl thinks of a cool lyrical line or song premise he’ll build a composition around it, but sometimes he will have a chord progression or lick to start with instead.

“It is usually starting with one concept or idea, whether it be lyrics or guitar and then building off of that,” Sperl said. “Having a core idea and adding on, and on, until it becomes one succinct thing.”

Sperl grew up in New England and has played guitar and sang since he was six, and he also plays ukulele and incorporates a little piano into his music from time to time. Now at age 25 he hails from the upper valley of New Hampshire and can be found playing local bars and open mics to get his sound out to listeners. Sperl also takes great pride in teaching music lessons at local institutions.

“Growing up, I was in a super musical family,” he said. “It had to be something, either guitar, piano, saxophone or something, and I thought guitar was the cool instrument as a six year old. So I went for it. My dad plays the trumpet, my mom’s a guitarist and sings. We all just have a really nice connection to music”.

Growing up Sperl was a huge John Mayer fan, but also loves Steely Dan as this was something he had heard from his father. He also said he is into Bruno Major and modern jazz, which has inspired him in his own music. Sperl also loves branching out and bending genre boundaries by incorporating vibes and sounds with inspiration from fringe artists like Sebastian Paul and Still Woozy that can be heard in songs like “Sky High” and “Let’s Chat!” and his upcoming Single “Photograph” (stay tuned).

Today, Sperl mostly plays solo but he loves to jam with people and learn from them as they all have their own unique style. He said it is nice to jam with others rather than get lost in your own creative space. He started writing and recording his music when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. “During Covid I had nothing else to do,” said Sperl. “I kind of made my bedroom the studio-put the sound panels on the wall and everything. It looks kind of ridiculous but it works. The start of 2021 was when I was really getting into it, toward the end of Covid and stuff. I have always written but never really recorded, so I’ve been having a really good time with that.”

Sperl said being stuck inside during the pandemic meant it was really hard to find things to connect to others. Even though he couldn’t be around people, being able to play music gave him a connection to the world even if he wasn’t out and about.

“It made me happy to write songs about things outside of being just stuck inside,” Sperl said.

“It kind of helped me get out of that for myself, as well, and I continue to feel that way.”

Now he is inspired by the people who come through his life, whether this be his family or his partner Fiona, who is a trained vocalist that he also collaborates with (their single “I Remember When” is a song full of love and is worth a listen).

“Music’s been such an outlet of happiness and joy for me, and I want to continue to share that with other people,” Sperl said.
