YOUNGSTOWN, OH - Many artists excel in one thing, but SJ Woo has successfully showcased his musical breadth, talent, and vocal range. “Tell Me” is SJ Woo’s debut single, proving why he’s referred to as the Crooner’s Crooner.
While SJ Woo is a classical pianist known for his contribution to church choirs and community and commercial ventures, “Tell Me” is a gift to R&B soul lovers who crave a deep, velvety voice that takes hold of your soul and does not let go.
“As soon as I heard the track, I was interested in doing something on it. It was very clean. It had a good feel, and I saw something in it,” said SJ Woo. “In many modern-day relationships, there’s a lot of things that go on, and it kind of turns into a war zone. We’ve all been there to some degree or another, but the level that they’re at is out of the ballpark. ‘Tell Me’ is about the heart within, and at the same time, tries to give some resolution. I thought that was a good message to have faith.”
Teaming up with award-winning producer and songwriter Jody Daniels for “Tell Me,” SJ Woo is in the top tier of music circles. His latest venture is a testament to his musical genius. While he is known throughout the industry as a versatile artist, his sensual yet strong voice places him in his own category. The resonance of his voice lingers as his pure range extends further than most R&B singers. SJ Woo stands out in a group for the artistry and rhythmic vibe of each note he sings.
Early on, SJ Woo was destined for musical greatness. With mentors such as Billy Beck of the Ohio Players and Clarence “Dr. Bob” Ross, an engineer for Michael Jackson, SJ Woo found early success as a member of Whoz Who, a Youngstown based, all-male, R&B group. Known for their five-part harmonies, Whoz Who was signed to Longevity/Aftermath Records and featured on Dr. Dre’s “Aftermath” album.
Using the name SJ Woo, which is a combination of his initials and a decades-long nickname, the Ohio native is spawned by his diverse, inspiring, and powerful musical abilities. Since his Whoz Who tenure, his resume as a classical pianist, artist, arranger, producer, and composer has grown.
While “Tell Me” continues to gain views on streaming platforms, for SJ Woo being an artist is more than just dropping singles. “Having grown up in a spiritual household as a son of a preacher, everything stemmed from acknowledging what God means for you or vice versa. I find that everything else takes care of itself by just acknowledging that,” he explained. “It’s about someone finding resolution out of whatever their situation and give them another way to look at things.”
As SJ Woo’s solo discography continues to grow, one thing is clear, the success of his early career has positioned him as a rising artist in today’s R&B scene. With future releases and videos dropping soon, SJ Woo is showing no signs of slowing down – and fans are loving him for it.
