Meera Naz is a multicultural artist based in Washington D.C. The American singer, songwriter, and composer blends her Indian classical music training with a dance, pop, and EDM twist in her first single, “No Hero.”
The single starts off strong with an upbeat, traditional instrumental, then introduces Meera Naz’s smooth and powerful vocals and the melodic chorus along the way.
“A “hero’ is a broad concept,” explains Meera Naz. “It can be someone close to you, or someone who doesn’t even know you exist. I thought it would be cool to explore the idea of a fallen idol or hero – someone you put on a pedestal and later felt letdown, about how it can make you feel foolish and trapped. In real life, one probably won’t call such a person out so bluntly - but it can be cathartic and empowering to do it in a song, and acknowledge your own feelings, while dancing away!”
Meera Naz not only cherishes her roots as a Bengali -American immigrant, she weaves her multicultural influence into her music as well. Throughout her childhood, the artist spent many years in South Asia, the Middle East, and the UK, strengthening her global viewpoint and cultural influences. Since the tender age of five, Meera Naz has been singing and performing as a solo artist, gracing the stage at neighborhood functions, local events, and singing competitions. She is also a skilled musician, who has been training in Indian classical music for years.
After a hiatus, Meera Naz has returned to music and is focusing her energy on songwriting and composing. “In never occurred to me to write and compose until last year—even though I’ve been singing since I was a kid,” shares Meera Naz. “Once I started doing it, all kinds of ideas started showing up.”
When it comes to writing music, serendipitous inspiration leads the way for Meera Naz’s creative process. “When a song first shows up, it’s usually just the first verse or chorus,” shares the artist. “It’ll stay stuck in my head until I finish the song. That’s how “No Hero” came about.” After creating the fallen idol/ hero concept and writing the lyrics and melody, she recorded the vocals at home in a guest bedroom. She worked with a producer to compose the instrumental behind “No Hero”, and mix and master the final cut. “I wanted a dance song that makes you want to move,” she shares. “The original song was slower, so I sped up the tempo, to make it more energetic and danceable. I also wanted the virtual sounds of many Indian instruments I grew up listening to incorporated into the music.” The result is a highly addictive pop/dance/EDM song, with a unique Indian instrumental influence.
“When I write music, I am hyper focused on melodies – everything else is secondary. I tend to create music that fuses eastern and western elements, as well as genres, because that’s what feels authentic to my artistic vision. says Meera Naz. “At the end of the day, music is a universal force with no boundaries, and I want to make music that anyone can enjoy and that makes the listener feel something.”
