MusicWeek Staff: Who are your biggest musical influences? Sam Welch: My biggest musical influences are Robbie Robertson(recently passed away) and The Band
MusicWeek Staff: When/How did you become interested in music? Sam Welch: I’ve been studying music since the age of 8(piano) and singing since high school and college. I was part of an Ivy League mens acapella group in college. I’ve used music as an emotional outlet since about 2000, when I first started writing and composing.
MusicWeek Staff: How does this song "Kamikaze Copilot" differ with your previous song? Sam Welch: Kamikaze Copilot explores the theme of what I call “social existentialism”—basically the idea that all of our relationships are finite. We all struggle with engaging with our current world while concurrently aware of the world that is to come.
MusicWeek Staff: What skills/personal attributes are most important to being successful? Sam Welch: I don’t produce music in a linear fashion. Writing lyrics differs greatly from instrumentals. I have also never stopped believing that there would some day be an audience of listeners who love listening to my songs.
MusicWeek Staff: How important do you think video is to your music?
Sam Welch: I’ve finally started performing live and I’m finding that live video feed of my performances is a great way of spreading the word about my music. This is also helping me to create a stronger musical persona.
MusicWeek Staff: What did you hope to achieve with your music video?
Sam Welch: I have a few music videos on Youtube, there is more to come. I enjoy using visuals to communicate themes about cosmology which are central to my music
MusicWeek Staff: How would you describe your new video to any potential new fan?
Sam Welch: I just released a video of a set that I did at Club Passim—I would jokingly call myself “an awesome sounding geezer”.
MusicWeek Staff: What set your music apart? What is unique, or at least uncommon?
Sam Welch: My genre is hard to classify. I have created a genre called “transcendental techno vox”—meaning that I write about themes of spiritual transcendence, while using midi-generated effects and vocally resonant content.
MusicWeek Staff: Has your music career journey had a deliberately direction or did it simply gradually evolve in whatever direction it found?
Sam Welch: I was more of a classically oriented musician to start out. Once I started creating my own music I used the medium as a springboard for addressing themes I have encountered all my adult life---questions like “what will happen when I die” and “will I ever recover from (mental)illness”?
MusicWeek Staff: Where can potential fans find out more about you? Sam Welch: I have a free website anyone can access to listen to my entire discography. Just go to www.sammywelch.com. There are also a number of radio interviews one can find on the net, including one by Vigilantes Radio, Non Stop Radio, The Brad Cooney Podcast, and the show “Creator to Creators” hosted by Meosha Bean.
