Spanish rapper Patrik Sk turns lyrics into an instrument in the “melodic rap” of “180°”

Patrik Sk, a Spanish artist with Swedish roots, has been writing and making music since he was 15 or 16, then lost a lot of his music when it turned out the studio where he recorded it, and not Patrik, had ownership rights.

Now, at 22, he has created the sound he wants and is starting over. His new song, “180°,” or “180 Degrees” in English, is his coming-out song, releasing June 14. The album it is on, 333, drops June 21.

It is a love song and a song about the things love can do. “180°” exemplifies the sound he has been working on for two years, a sound he calls “melodic rap.” On this song, and on others in the album, Patrik Sk’s rap becomes another musical instrument. On this song, his collaborator Galla Civi adds her voice to the mix.

The song, like all his songs, is in Spanish, but knowledge of that language is not necessary to enjoy them. The ebb and flow of notes in the lyrics merge with the instrumentation to form a musical river of sound on which the listener can ride.

But if you want to know what the song is about:

“It’s a song about being so focused on something that you don’t want to be connected with the world,” he said, “not on social media and not in person. You want to be focused on what you need to do at the moment to make a good future for yourself.”

Then love enters the picture.

“And you wake up the emotions, and then you start taking care of the emotional part of you, but it’s like a war between the mental state of being focused and the emotional state of being in love,” he said.

So, life does an about-face and turns 180 degrees.

Patrik has been working on 333 and its 13 tracks since he last dropped music in 2022. With the expropriation of his previous catalog, he now has five songs out. “180°” will be the sixth, and the first to be released off the album.

The song is the embodiment of his melodic rap, and he chose it to be the first release for that reason and because it features Galla, with whom he has been friends since he was 10 years old. This is her first professional release, and Patrik wants to help start her career.

“I wanted my friend Galla to get more attention, so people can hear her in a song, in the front of it and not like in the background.”

He said “180°” announces melodic rap and is a marker for Patrik Sk’s development as an artist.

“Yeah, I changed my style,” he said. “I made my sound better. I make it the sound I want to make, and it makes me a different artist.”

It affects the way he creates music and the way he collaborates with other artists—and the album will have a lot of collaborators.

“Now I know what I want from my music, I know what I don’t want, so, I am in the best place for making music because I know the kind of music I can play better and that makes me feel better.”

While his music is for the Spanish-speaking world, his sound is based “on American artists because I like American rappers especially.”

“The language is Spanish, the type of music I most listened to is American rap.”

His primary influences include NBA YoungBoy, Juice WRLD, Young Thug, Future, NLE Choppa, Gino2x, Polo G, YNW Melly, Migos and more.

The changes are personal, too. When he first got back into music in 2021 to 2022, he said, he produced sad songs.

“I was like, lost. I didn’t know what I wanted, or what I wanted for my life, and I was lost in all the dimensions of my life.”

He took the two-year, almost three-year break to develop his music and, in the process, became the kind of artist he wants to be.

“In our process during these three years, some things that make me better in other parts of my life make me better in music, and I feel better making the type of music I do. The message is motivation—think that you can do it. So before, I was sad, and now I am a booster of inspiration and motivation and good vibes. That makes me the best version of myself.”
