Win Obami is a French-American artist from Nanterre, France who now resides in Los Angeles, California. He has survived a rough childhood, growing up by himself in a dangerous environment thanks to his love for music. He makes music in both the R&B and Rap lanes but he’s also carving a path in an entirely new genre that he created himself. The name of the genre is “Soulflow,” and it blends elements from Soul, R&B and Rap.
In this exclusive Q&A, Win Obami opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.
MusicsWeek: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Win Obami: Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, and La Fouine (French rapper)
MusicsWeek: What non-musical influences (books, movies, art, etc.) inspire your work?
Win Obami: Nothing non-musical really impacts my work.
MusicsWeek: Is there a particular song or album that has significantly influenced your career?
Win Obami: The album Fan of a Fan 2 by Chris Brown and Tyga. Most of Michael Jackson's discography.
MusicsWeek: How do your personal experiences shape your music?
Win Obami: A lot of challenges by growing struggles in life forged some character, and it allowed me to combine my musical skills and my resilience to create an expressive genre "Soulflow".
MusicsWeek: Have your influences changed over the years?
Win Obami: No, still the same, but I started to like Michael Jackson way before other artists/songs.
MusicsWeek: How do you incorporate your cultural background into your music?
Win Obami: The way my lyrics and overall music are shaped is a perfect combination of my bilingual skills and identity. I borrowed some French influence and some American influence to create a unique style that doesn’t really sound familiar to either an American audience or french audience.
MusicsWeek: What role does nature or your environment play in your songwriting?
Win Obami: My past relationship and experiences with people.
MusicsWeek: When did you first realize you wanted to be a musician?
Win Obami: It came naturally, but I started to be a musician because I felt really good while doing music.
MusicsWeek: What was the first song you ever wrote, and what inspired it?
Win Obami: The first song I ever wrote and still available to this day is "Emotions". I wrote it instinctively; there’s no true inspiration or meaning.
MusicsWeek: How did you get started in the music industry?
Win Obami: I officially started in the music industry with my song "Emotions" which has featured in many blogs and radio stations like Phoenix FM 98.
