Welcome back to SOUND ADVICE, Interview’s weekly hub for playlists assembled by our friends, adversaries and crushes. In the past few weeks, the series has spotlighted selections from Nat and Alex Wolff, Skype Williams and True Blue. This edition shines a light on Chicago rapper Sunshine Benzi, who has confidently branded herself as “Chicago’s Miss Galliano.” Rarely spotted without heels and her signature ginger hair perfectly styled, Benzi has been gaining attention recently with the release of her song “Trump the Bill,” followed by a remix featuring New York rapper Cleotrapa. Wanting to dig a little deeper, we asked Benzi to put together a playlist for us, which ended up spanning everything from essential hood anthems by Biggie to timeless, earthy rock favourites from Fleetwood Mac. She then took on our questionnaire, opening up about her personal Mount Rushmore of women in rap and revealing where to find all the finest fine shyt tucked away across Chicago.

———

Where do you dance? In my kitchen, in the library, really anywhere you have to be serious.

Who is on your Mount Rushmore of female rappers? Nicki Minaj, Foxy Brown, Lil Kim, and Miss Lauryn Hill.

Where can you find the best hot dog in Chicago? Maxwell Street. Extra peppers!

What message do you have for Mr. Trump? Man, sit down somewhere! I’ll be the first to sign your impeachment papers.

What song on this playlist makes your sun shine? “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac

What are you wearing at the gates of heaven? A leopard print fur coat and pink Giuseppe pumps.

What’s your favorite Nicki verse? “Changed It” – Nicki & Lil Wayne.

Where can I find the best fur coats? My closet!

What were you listening to in 2016? A lot of Alina Baraz & Galimatias, G-Eazy, Solange, and Kehlani.

What’s the sexiest song on your playlist? “Peak” by Drake.

If you were President, what law would you pass on your first day? I would make it a law for the military to wear all pink 24/7.

What’s your favorite rap beef of all time? Biggie & Tupac or Foxy & Kim. Both were a battle of the greats!

Who are your style icons? Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano.

What’s a song on this playlist you wish you wrote? “Maybe” by Janis Joplin.

Which Chicago neighborhood has the best fine shyt? I’d have to say Pilsen or Hyde Park.

Who is your dream collaboration? Adele. The little girl in me would scream!

What pumps do you wear in the studio? Right now, my studio shoes are these grey heels I got from Shoe Department. They’re a size too big, but they’re comfy.

What is your musical taste red flag? If they listen to The Smiths or Deftones — RUN. I love both btw.
