The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 showdown between Mexico and England on Sunday, July 5, has sparked plenty of buzz online, with several music stars joining the conversation. Ahead of the highly anticipated match at Estadio Ciudad de México, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher confidently predicted on Wednesday, July 1, that England would dominate Mexico, prompting a spirited response from Maná singer Fher Olvera.

In a video shared on Instagram while wrapped in a Mexican flag, Olvera fired back at Gallagher’s prediction. “The Oasis singer said Mexico was going to lose to England 5 to 0. Come on, no way. Get real, dude!” he said. “5 to 0? Calm down! We’ll see on Sunday how it goes, dude.” His message quickly gained traction online, inspiring fans to flood social media with supportive comments and memes backing Maná and the Mexican National Team, which had just ended a nearly 50 year wait for a World Cup knockout stage victory by defeating Ecuador 2 to 0 on Tuesday.

Gallagher first made his prediction after responding to a fan on X, who asked about England’s famous loss to Argentina during the 1986 FIFA World Cup at Estadio Azteca, now known as Estadio Ciudad de México for this tournament.

“I think we’ll beat Mexico 5 to 0,” Gallagher posted, setting off a lively debate across social media. He later admitted he was “obv kidding” before revising his prediction to a 3 to 0 England win, citing the “heat and altitude” expected during the match. When another fan asked what would happen if England actually won 5 to 0, Gallagher jokingly replied on X, “Well I’ll obv take all the credit.”

The exchange also inspired reactions from content creators and well known Mexican figures, including former RBD member Alfonso Herrera, who joined the fun by sharing memes aimed at the British rocker. Oasis, whose music has long enjoyed a devoted following in Mexico, launched the Latin American leg of its reunion tour in Mexico City last September with two sold out performances at Estadio GNP Seguros.

Liam and Noel Gallagher, the founding members of Oasis, have long been outspoken soccer fans and loyal supporters of Manchester City. Meanwhile, Maná participated in the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Estadio Ciudad de México on June 11, performing alongside Shakira, Burna Boy, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Danny Ocean, Los Ángeles Azules, and Tyla.

Olvera also headlined a massive free concert at Glorieta de la Minerva in his hometown of Guadalajara on June 17. According to the Government of Jalisco, the event attracted an estimated crowd of 170,000 people and formed part of the city’s official World Cup Fan Fest celebrations as one of the tournament’s host locations.

When kickoff arrives on Sunday, the playful back and forth between Gallagher and Olvera will give way to the action on the pitch. Mexico and England have not met at a FIFA World Cup since 1966, when the two nations played to a 1 to 1 draw.
