Madonna Reveals Delay in Talks With Sabrina Carpenter’s Team

Madonna says she contacted Sabrina Carpenter herself after waiting five days to hear whether the singer wanted to collaborate.

The Vogue and Espresso singers took the stage together at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles to accept Best Collaboration for Bring Your Love.

During their speech, Madonna teased Sabrina’s team about the delay, explaining that she eventually sent Sabrina a direct message.

“Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am. When five days passed and I still didn't get connected with Sabrina and didn't hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me - five days - I DM'ed her,” she said. Sabrina looked surprised and laughed.

“And this is a true story, she answered me back and I don't know, within weeks we were in the studio together. It was fabulous,” Madonna continued, before complimenting Sabrina’s professionalism.

Sabrina came to her team’s defence, joking that they were “s**tting themselves backstage”.

“My team replies, just so everybody knows,” she said. “They do respond to people, but I respond faster. So direct line to me is always the best way to get in contact.”

Madonna had opened the ceremony with her first VMAs performance in 23 years. Sabrina joined her for Bring Your Love, and Charli XCX later appeared for Danceteria Afterhours, her new remix with Madonna.

The performance, staged around a bathroom stall, also included appearances by Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Sombr and producer Andrew Watt.

Released in April, Bring Your Love was the first official single from Madonna’s Confessions II. She and Sabrina had performed it together during Sabrina’s Coachella headline set earlier that month.
