SAN FRANCISCO - They say that everyone can be a leader, but some people are born leaders. Leor Da’vinci’s new EP, “Born Leader,” is blazing the trail for a new kind of hip hop.
According to Da’vinci, his music offers fans an opportunity to get back in tune with reality, “Anytime that anybody’s being authentic and different, it usually gives a refreshing vibe to their music. My music is different without the same ordinary sounds that people usually hear in mainstream music. It’s refreshing hip hop but more soulful.”
Da’vinci adds his flair to his unique sound by keeping it genuine. “It’s very up-tempo to enjoy it and party to it, but underneath, you can find a message there,” he said. “When I was growing up listening to music when you got to those songs that connected to you, it was because it resonated with you. I may not be able to touch everyone, but I try to be broad enough that you will be able to pull something from it.”
Released through Creative Thoughts Records, “Born Leader” contains ten tracks and represents Da’vinci at his finest as the EP’s mixer/engineer and singer/songwriter.
“Born Leader” is a collection of songs that Da’vinci based on the last two years in which his father died. “I created this EP based on my life experiences of what I was noticing. There’s many kids following certain things, instead of their moral values, just to fit in,” he said. “But it takes a leader not to conform to the society’s norms.”
“Mr. Finnesser” ft. Malik Corleone represents Da’vinci’s authentic sound. The up-tempo track has a killer synthesizer moaning throughout, dragging the beat as Da’vinci lays down his lyrics. “I rap about how a person can fake like there’s somebody else to obtain a higher goal and people let them. And I catch the bad end of the stick, as people would say,” he explained.
“Misguided” is a hard-hitting track that Da’vinci shares his story and urges youth not to be misguided or seduced to follow others down the path of crime. It is making money vs. getting a job. “I see many of my friends get caught up in that social norm based on where we’re from, and I’m just letting them know. It’s a dead-end,” said Da’vinci, who was born in Mississippi and raised in Fayetteville, NC.
For listeners seeking a highspeed and blistering hip hop album, “Born Leader” fits the bill while sharing truth and motivation about leaving a life of crime and the hood behind. The EP was created in three days during a lock-in. Da’vinci and his team entered the studio with nothing, but during the next 72 hours, original beats were transformed into “Born Leader.”
“Having a DJ background helped me realize what a lot of people like and what gets them going,” he said. “When I’m creating music, it’s not one-sided. You don’t listen to it without feeling complete. Everything I create is for my fans to have fun and to know we all have the same problems. I’m no different from them; I’m just making quality music.”
