Grover, North Carolina — Thomas LaVine, a U.S.-based musician and songwriter, brings together wavy synths, delicate melodies, and warm acoustics for an infusion of sound beyond all expectations.
The artist is currently releasing songs from his debut EP, “Everwood,” set for full release in May 2022. “Everwood” speaks to the “spirit of wonder inside us all to experience something greater than ourselves.” For Thomas LaVine, that is the vast and untamed wilderness and the continuous search for understanding who we are, who he is, and what he wants to be.
To find his inspiration, Thomas LaVine ventures into the great outdoors. From wildlife photography to hiking, outdoor recreation motivates the artist by simply allowing him the time to settle into the stillness of nature. “As corny as it sounds, I like to sit and enjoy the sunlight. I derive a ton of pleasure from doing absolutely nothing.”
Writing songs often starts as “an unintentional thing” in Thomas LaVine’s daily life. “I can be doing literally anything and a melody comes to me. I mess around with the guitar and record voice memos on my phone. When I can, I come out to the tool shed in my backyard that I converted into a music studio—there I record all my stuff.” Sometimes, the artist records the idea and finishes the song in its entirety as he records. Other times, he’ll finish the original concept on guitar and then focus on the production around it.
Thomas LaVine demonstrates that along with passion must come perseverance. Whether he’s finishing a deck in his backyard or working on his latest album, the artist is driven and dedicated to his craft. Since age 18, the artist has been writing songs and learning the entire process of creating full tracks on his own.
“I come from a small town. When I wanted to start writing music, I didn’t have any option but to learn to do it myself. As a result, I got a protective ownership where I didn’t want anyone else messing with it. The songs mean a lot to me,” says LaVine of producing his own work.
The multi-talented artist generally creates music from top to bottom on his own. Once in a while, when a track is “not quite there or ready to release,” Thomas LaVine may invite an outside producer to contribute another take on the song. However, the artist prefers keeping all elements of production—aside from mixing and mastering—in house. “It feels like a stranger in your house in a lot of ways. The music would sound a lot different if a producer were involved from the start.”
LaVine’s new EP is a culmination of years of work and dedication to songwriting. “I feel like it’s connected the most as a songwriter and producer. Something clicked with me more so than it has in the past.” Thomas LaVine is so excited about the EP’s release that he is happy to share lyrics from the last track: “Ghost of a long forgotten past. Stunned that the feeling didn’t last. Why do you stay inside my head? Guess we don’t choose our demons.”
