Up-and-coming hip-hop and R&B artist NickyP is taking a home-grown approach to music mastery and quickly building momentum. Inspired by numerous legends from Gospel, hip-hop, and R&B, NickyP is creating a sound true to his own voice.
His newest single—out April 15, 2022—is “Gas Station” featuring Mayjah Payne. Last autumn, the artist released his sophomore album, “ProBioTics,” which followed up his debut album, “Biologics.” NickyP’s “Gas Station” single is poised to create a stir and bring more listeners into his fanbase.
“Gas Station” started as a verse and hook that NickyP created but “was sitting on” until a fellow artist and friend got him to polish it off and create a single. “It’s more of a feel-good type of song. A chilling-out-sunny-day-top-down-on-the-freeway type of song.”
From Oxnard, CA, Nick Price—aka NickyP—packs a punch with his vocal range and lyricism. Yet NickyP wasn’t always a musician—in fact he “kind of picked it up during the pandemic.” Previously, the talented new artist was polishing off his other gift and dominating on the basketball court at the Sports Academy (previously known as the Mamba Sports Academy) against fellow hoopers that had either hooped at a pro level, in college, or could just flat out ball.
“Since I started doing music, I’ve noticed a lot of parallels to it,” explains the artist of how music and basketball come hand in hand in his life. The creativity behind both—whether crafting lyrics or formulating a play—keeps NickyP motivated toward success.
“I love creating a song from scratch. The ideas and cadences and melodies, the details that go into it—that’s part of the fun.” In addition to the writing and recording process, the artist also enjoys the production process and has expedited his learning curve in regard to mixing and mastering tracks. “The mixing part has pros and cons,” says NickyP of mastering the skill of mixing. “I’ve learned a ton from the first song I mixed til now. Although time consuming if doing it from scratch, the ability to continue discovering gems on how to get your sound as pristine as possible—running into those ‘a-ha’ moments so-to speak, makes it all worthwhile.”
After researching the most efficient way to set up a studio and doing it, NickyP dove into the music side of things and quickly taught himself how to produce music from scratch. “The process took a lot less time than I had initially envisioned,” says the artist of his home-grown approach to production. His actual creation/artistic process is pretty straight forward and simple. Whatever the vibe, feel, tempo, or overall direction of the song is, “it has to be dope.” You can’t really go wrong with that approach.
This year, NickyP is looking forward to treating listeners to a new single every 3-4 weeks. As we patiently await his next single, be sure to check out the links below:
