Indie Funk Band Gold Shimmer Hits the Big Time with Latest Single, “Mr. Downtown”

LOS ANGELES - Gold Shimmer is on “a musical mission to show these turkeys who puts the funk in your feet, who pimps the pulse on that beat, who runs these streets.”

With a retro yet contemporary vibe, Gold Shimmer’s music takes people back to when funk ruled the world. Revisiting the old sound and bringing it to modern audiences, Gold Shimmer is a glistening gem of musical mastery.

“We are the time machine, and the listeners are the explorers of that space,” said JD, Gold Shimmer’s lead man and primary songwriter.

Joining JD is Reverend Doctor, who compliments JD’s vision and is the glue that holds the band together through collaboration and bringing the funk.

Gold Shimmer stands out from other funk bands and fuses the So-Cal classics, indie music, and traditional funk to create hipster dance music.

“We have a retro sound and are acclimated to other things,” explained JD. “These are the sounds and ideas I grew up with - and that is what makes us free.”

Like a well-oiled machine, Reverend Doctor said, “JD is our primary songwriter, but the cool thing about collaborating is that we all leave our prints on the music.”

JD agreed, “I draw the blueprints, and the other musicians help build the house.”

Dropping April 30, “Mr. Downtown” is the latest funk masterpiece by Gold Shimmer. Inspired by a character JD encountered at a club, Mr. Downtown, a Hollywood huckster, is a hip sunglass-wearing, womanizing, fast car driving dude whose gold rings and chains shine brightly. Mr. Downtown is a cool but dangerous guy that comes alive in the song and is showcased in the music video.

Sonically, “Mr. Downtown” is an epic anthem with a driving bassline that shouts funk. According to Reverend Doctor, “‘Mr. Downtown’ is the idea of borrowing the tool of funk as an act of disruption. It is funk storytelling when you have an art form that was to experience the extremes of human emotion, grief, joy, etc.”

As a pioneering group for this new indie-funk movement, Gold Shimmer brings an unpredictable experience to its live shows. Known for its impulsive and ever-changing performance styles, “It’s almost like an art-house presentation with an eight-piece legit funk band, and then we can be an acoustic trio,” explained Reverend Doctor. “We change the mold to fit the moment.”

As COVID restrictions ease, the group is eager to hit the stage, and fans can be assured of experiencing a new and different show each night.

“Whether listening at home or live show, there is a sense of a change inside you when you hear our music,” said JD. “We are doing things differently, and it fits into our cult and niche audience because the last time, it was a show and a sound you never experienced before.”
