This Heart I Surrender blends emo-punk, metal, and alternative rock to create the unique sound showcased in their latest single, “Raise It,” dropping July 8 with a music video. The band’s music speaks to “being fed up with the way things are, the way life is.” According to bandmate Jairius, “With all the garbage going on in the country and world right now, we’re putting our foot down and rising up, standing for what’s honorable and right.” Weaving powerful melody with distinctive instrumentals, the band delivers clever messaging with ear-candy tunes for an unforgettable sound.
Lead vocalist Jourdan Westenberg (2000s punk music lover with an affinity for drinking coffee backstage), drummer and beat maker Jairius Stolar (dashboard beat maker extraordinaire), lead guitarist Kyle Conner (complete with a southern drawl and guitar shredding skills), and bassist and guitarist Will Peters (high-shelf reacher for the team) make up the band.
The band’s music can best be described as tasteful, contemporary music—the here and now. They are inspired by other bands they listen to but also take everyday life into account when writing new material. “First, we get an idea for a song in daily life. Then come up with the melody. And then we all put our fingerprints on it and it morphs into an awesome rock song. It takes shape when we’re all together.”
When it comes to recording, the musicians are perfectionists in everything they do. “we’re not 80%ers. We want it to be perfect and right. Sometimes we will do 20 takes per song and it’s still not enough, like, ‘this isn’t it.’” While some songs take as few as two days, others can take years. “It really depends on the song. Sometimes it comes in 10 minutes and then we chug out the music in two days; yet we have one that took 8 years to make.”
The beauty of working together is that their music blossoms into something greater than the original sound. “if we change it, it becomes three different songs into one. We have creative differences—we each know what we like. We could all like the same song but we all like and dislike different elements of that song. It’s about combining our tastes.”
With a song about to be released, the band looks back on how far they’ve come with humble appreciation. These days, they’re not just listening to performers they like—they’re even collaborating with them. “It’s amazing working with people you listen to and looked up to growing up,” the band shared. In the next year, they hope to partner with mentors to help elevate their music further. “I want to start getting it out there. I want to do this full time.”
