The Multi-talented Sisaundra Lewis Delivers Hope Through Gospel Single Yes (Youd hear my mom say)

“The song isn’t about me—it’s about the people and their surrender,” shares Lewis of her newest single. “This song allows me to be a vessel for others who are feeling and hurting. Watching people sing this song is everything I could have asked for in a single—it’s for the people.”

Her single, “Yes” Is a celebration of life, as well as a fond memory of her late mother bringing an entire congregation to life with the power of voice. “You could feel God ushered into the room with her song,” tells Lewis of her mother’s rendition long ago. “The whole church was on fire. It was an amazing spiritual experience to grow up with as a child.”

“‘Yes’ is about saying ‘yes, Lord, I need you. We know you died for us and gave your life and we’re thankful for that.’ In these crazy times, we just need to have a cry, a need for God. That’s what this song is all about.”

Supported by a full-time band, Sisaundra Lewis and her phenomenal team were able to create music openly, letting ideas flow freely in the studio. “Yes” was born from an old hymn in the public domain to which they added a fresh bridge and reimagined into a hit single. “It’s a powerful message and space to be in, to share something humbling,” adds Lewis.

“I’m hoping everyone will embrace it. The most incredible feedback I’ve received is people saying they need the Lord and they’re saying yes to him,” says Lewis. She recalls a moment of connection with a woman working at the drive-through who recognized her and let her know that “Yes” inspired her to go on during difficult moments. “Sometimes everyone keeps driving by, and all that person needs is to tell you ‘I didn’t have a good day and I’m hurting inside.’”

At the end of the day, Lewis is more than a singer and performer—she is a genuine, kind soul with endless love to give. “I want people to share myself one with everyone, not because I need them to, but because I want people to feel the emotions of caring and love that we shared through creating this music.”

At 44 years old, Sisaundra Lewis was the first “seasoned” contestant on The Voice—an incredible accomplishment that brought years of hard work and “back burner dreams” into the spotlight.

“It was my 16-year-old daughter who challenged me, saying ‘you’re a singer, why aren’t you singing? You always told us to live our dreams—you’re not living your dreams.’ I thought to myself that either she was right or tired of me being home,” shares Lewis jokingly. Yet that’s exactly what she did—she stood in line in New York, waiting to audition for a chance to be on The Voice, living her dreams as a professional singer.

Hard work and passion come hand in hand for the singer, who grew up working alongside her family at a young age. “I grew up in the orange groves, working in fields from age five to 18,” explains Lewis. “My father was a bishop and sharecropper. It was out in the fields where I learned to sing and pray, I discovered my voice in those fields and realized the joy that my voice would bring people.” 

Sisaundra Lewis began sharing her gift with people, first in front of the congregation where she learned to share her gift of music through her voice. And eventually on the main stage, on a globally recognized show, where she watched four chairs turn around in support as she envisioned herself back in the very fields that first heard her voice.

While Lewis boasts an impressive resume—she was the vocal director and choreographer for Céline Dion and had a number-one U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Hit single in 2005—she’s not boasting at all. fact, chatting with the multi-talented singer is like going out for a coffee with a close friend—the time just slips away and the stories never grow tiresome.
