Chris Rock‘s contribution of laughter and thought-provoking examinations on society have made him one of the more iconic comedians and actors of his era. Born Feb. 7, 1965 in South Carolina and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Rock first broke out as a comic performing at local clubs, attracting the attention and mentorship of Eddie Murphy.
After landing bit roles in Murphy’s 1987 film Beverly Hills Cop II and Keenen Ivory Wayans’ I’m Gonna Git You Sucka the following year, Rock spent the early ’90s building his comedic resume. This included stints as a cast member on Saturday Night Live and In Living Color, as well as through his own award-winning standup comedy specials Bring the Pain and Bigger & Blacker.
He also gained further traction as an actor during the latter half of the decade, with prominent roles in a mix of urban classics and crossover blockbusters. Having not only starred in, but produced and directed several films and documentaries, Rock is regarded as one of the most accomplished comedians of all-time.
His accolades include three Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Album, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Golden Globe Award nomination, placing him squarely within distance of EGOT territory. Chris Rock leaned on his comedic chops while providing a glimpse into his depth as a thespian in his role as a drug-addled informant in this classic urban crime drama. Providing knee-jerking moments of humor to an otherwise dark tale, Rock’s performance as “Pookie” endures to this day and remains among his most memorable roles to date.
Chris Rock stars as aspiring rapper MC Gusto In this satirical examination of studio gangsters in Hip-Hop. Written and co-produced by Rock, this sleeper hit included cameos from Ice-T, Halle Berry, Ice Cube, Flavor Flav, Shaquille O’Neal and the late Eazy-E.
In 1998, Rock scored a part in the fourth installment of the Lethal Weapon franchise as Detective Lee Butters, the father of Detective Roger Murtaugh’s (Danny Glover) unborn grandchild. Cast alongside Mel Gibson, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, and Jet Li, Rock’s appearance in this film marked his first appearance in a crossover, blockbuster release, and was among the highest-grossing movies of the year.

Sharing screentime with castmates Regina King, Eugene Levy, Frankie Faison, Jennifer Coolidge, Chazz Palminteri and Wanda Sykes, Rock put forth one of his first leading roles of his career, with the film grossing more than double its budget at the box office.
Chris Rock added yet another cult-classic to his filmography with his role in this quirky comedy based off of a sketch from The Chris Rock Show. Also credited as a producer of the film, Rock appeared alongside Lance Crouther, J. B. Smoove as Trucky, Jennifer Coolidge, Wanda Sykes and Robert Vaughn in this underrated, Louis C.K.-directed gem.
Chris Rock continued to settle into his role as a multihyphenate with his work on this 2003 release. Written and produced by Rock, who starred opposite the late Bernie Mac, this comedic entry may not have performed as well as prior or later efforts from the Brooklyn native, but garnered laughs from the two comics’ base audience.

Cast as stay-at-home father Kurt McKenzie, Rock joins the likes of Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider in this feel-good comedy. Reliving their childhood during a massive reunion, bonds are strengthened and laughs are had in this 2010 film, which grossed $272 million and spawned the equally popular sequel, Grown Ups 2, in 2013.
In 2014, Chris Rock delivered this freewheeling love story set in the heart of the Big Apple. Portraying a hotshot comedic actor whose personal life is on the brink of a downward spiral, Rock shares scenes with Rosario Dawson, an inquisitive journalist looking to land the profile that will vault her career to the next level. Directed and written by Rock, with appearances and cameos from Kevin Hart, Jerry Seinfeld, J.B. Smoove, Adam Sandler, Cedric the Entertainer, Whoopi Goldberg, Tracy Morgan and more, this critical darling has evolved into a cult classic and only gotten finer with time.
