2023 found us losing rappers like Gangsta Boo, YNG Cheese, Young Lo, Trugoy the Dove, Magoo, and more.
It’s another year, and unfortunately, the culture has lost numerous rappers. 2024 has only hit the halfway point, and fans have mourned the loss of Enchanting, Lil Scoom89, and the legendary Brother Marquise.
Here’s all the rappers we’ve lost so far.
Enchanting

Enchanting died at age 26 in June after suffering from a drug overdose. A representative for the rapper, née Channing Nicole Larry, stated that she was reportedly going through withdrawal from a drug addiction in her final days, saying, “She came to my house the last four days to get clean. She tried her best, and I did everything I could to help her; she tried.” Per an official statement from Enchanting’s team, the artist had been taken off of life support following a drug overdose.
Julio Foolio

Julio Foolio, né Charles Jones, was shot and killed while the rapper was celebrating his 26th birthday in Tampa. TMZ released surveillance footage on Wednesday (July 3), showing Jones being ambushed at a Holiday Inn in Tampa, where a masked man could be seen approaching Foolio’s car.
Lewis Fusco, the rising rapper’s attorney, stated that the artist was “ambushed” in the parking lot, resulting in his untimely demise. “Mr. Jones had been in Tampa to celebrate his birthday over the weekend,” Fusco said in a statement. “Law enforcement reports indicate that he initially stayed at an Airbnb but was asked to leave due to exceeding occupancy limits. He subsequently relocated to the Holiday Inn, where he was involved in an incident in the hotel parking lot and reportedly ambushed.”
Lil Scoom89

Lil Scoom89, né Asyrion Hogan, was killed in a shooting on 89th and Langley, according to Channel 3 Now. Chicago Police responded to a call on Sunday (July 7) night regarding a shooting. Cops arrived on the scene and found the rapper with two gunshot wounds in his chest. He was rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital but was, unfortunately, pronounced dead.
Chris King

Los Angeles rapper, Chris King, was shot and killed in Nashville in April. He was age 32. WKRN Newsreported that the rapper and his friends were in an alleyway when robbers approached them. Gunfire followed, with bullets striking King. The rapper, né Christopher Cheeks, began running until he eventually passed out. Cheeks was found in a parking garage before being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. There, the musician succumbed to his injuries and died.
Laws pioneered the West Coast gangsta rap scene in the ’90s, carving out a spot in the subgenre for the ladies.
Brother Marquise

Brother Marquis of 2 Live Crew passed away at the age of 58 from a heart attack. The historic Miami rap group shared the unfortunate news on Monday (June 3).
“Mark Ross AKA Brother Marquis of the 2 Live crew has passed away,” the group posted to their Instagram along with a photo of the artist back in the day.
“My Condolence goes out to the Family of Brother Marquis and so many of his Fans from around the World after learning his passing,” Uncle Luke typed on X/Twitter. “We took on so many fights for the culture made Great music together something I would never forget.”
DJ Mister Cee

The iconic DJ Mister Cee died at age 57 in April as a result of a diabetes-related coronary artery and kidney disease. Following his death, his family released a statement regarding the legend’s life. “On behalf of the Lebrun, Wilson, Calixte families we want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support for our brother, uncle, nephew Calvin ‘DJ Mister Cee’ Lebrun in the wake of his untimely passing,” the statement read. “It’s a huge loss for our entire family, the borough of Brooklyn and the entire Hip-Hop Community.”
Mister Cee served as the DJ on Hot 97 and 94.7’s The Block. But a lot of fans may remember him for his work alongside Big Daddy Kane and The Notorious B.I.G.
Rico Wade

Rico Wade, a legendary Hip-Hop producer known for his work as a part of Organized Noize, died in April from heart failure. During the time of his death, Wade’s family released a statement on his behalf.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected passing of our son, father, husband, and brother Rico Wade,” the statement read. “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a talented individual who touched the lives of so many. We ask that you respect the legacy of our loved one and our privacy at this time.”
Rico Wade pioneered the foundation for Atlanta Hip-Hop in his work with the Organized Noize camp. The production team, which featured Sleepy Brown, Ray Murray, and the Dungeon Family collective, discovered groups like OutKast and Goodie Mob. Wade and co. also produced for some of the biggest 90s groups such as TLC, En Vogue, and more.
Tan DaGod

Tan DaGod, an Oakland rising rapper, died on Saturday (July 13). KTVU reports that Tan was shot and killed outside of a beauty store in her hometown while attending a meet & greet. The musician shared the location’s address on her social media, asking fans to pop out for her. Unfortunately, she would meet her demise at the same location she posted in her pictures. Bay Area legend Mistah F.A.B. sent his condolences to the young talent on Instagram. The artist was set to appear alongside the late rapper but “God had different plans.”
“The violence is beyond understanding the hurt the pain the trauma has made a forever lasting impact @tan.dagod I will always remember you as a hustling ass go getter, with a world of ambition,drive and courage and a heart big as TEXAS!!!! I love you lil sis and told you on several occasions sad to see this happen!!! They had me booked to be there with you but GOD had different plans .. to #Tannation family and friends may our warmest condolences be with you!! @thehunkster1 believed in you like no other Damn this one hella weak!!!! Peace and blessings,” he wrote.
