KiKey Da Weirdo: I’ve always loved music. I was always the one people come to for all the new music. Being overwhelmed with emotions started me to create my own music. Needing a way to express my emotions. What other way to do it than to do it doing something you love.
MusicsWeek: What inspired you to become a musician?
KiKey Da Weirdo: Freestyling on a beat and listening to myself I was shaken. I sounded good! It made me happy in my time of darkness. It always did. So I thought I could do this then I started my journey as a musician.
MusicsWeek: Can you tell us a bit about your background and upbringing?
KiKey Da Weirdo: My background wasn’t the happiest but it wasn’t the worst. Born in raised in Chicago,IL. My household wasn’t the best. Kind of toxic really. But my mom did the best that she could. Raising 8 children mostly on her own. We lived in the projects. The hood. But again it wasn’t all bad. Lots of arguments & fights that traumatized me for a while. Low-income family. Very smart kid who always tried to find a hustle to help take care of the family.
MusicsWeek: What's your favorite memory related to music?
KiKey Da Weirdo: I remember being as young as 3 listening to & trying to sing Aaliyah songs. My family would turn on her music because they knew I would try to sing.
MusicsWeek: What's your biggest passion outside of music?
KiKey Da Weirdo: My biggest passion outside of music would have to be fashion. I love to express myself with my different styles in fashion.
MusicsWeek: How do you stay motivated and inspired?
KiKey Da Weirdo: I think it’s easy to stay motivated & inspired when you’re doing something you love and I love music.
MusicsWeek: What's your favorite song to play live?
KiKey Da Weirdo: I think it depends on my mood if I’m playing any song live. I don’t really think I have one specific song to play.
MusicsWeek: What's your creative process like when writing songs?
KiKey Da Weirdo: Having fun most of all when I’m writing is my go-to when writing. No matter the genre. I love to bring the audience into my world. I’m a thinker. So my goal is to get the audience to think. So I love to wordplay. For example, I could be saying multiple things in one sentence.
MusicsWeek: Do you have a favorite album or artist that influences your work?
KiKey Da Weirdo: I don’t think any artist influences my work because I’d like to think that my work is unique. But Aaliyah & Micheal Jackson will be at the top of my list of favorites.
MusicsWeek: What's the most challenging part of being a musician?
KiKey Da Weirdo: I think the most challenging part of being a musician is trying to get the audience to understand your craft without any misunderstandings.
