Exclusive Interview with DonnyJ

MusicsWeek: What first sparked your interest in music, and what led you to pursue it as a career?

DonnyJ: I was thrust into music at the age of 3. It was a perfect intersection of skill meets opportunity meets outcome. And I never looked back. Initially, I used to do it as a chore but eventually, it grew on me and germinated into something more than a mundane hobby.

MusicsWeek: Which artists or genres have had the biggest impact on your sound?

DonnyJ: The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, Charlie Puth

MusicsWeek: How would you describe your musical style to someone who hasn’t heard your music yet?

DonnyJ: Alternative Pop

MusicsWeek: Can you walk us through the creative process behind your latest track or album?

DonnyJ:
"Savour" marries the traditional elements of a pop song into the not-so-traditional aspects of a film score. Drawing inspiration from the arrangement of a movie theme integrating a memorable hook and catchy lyrics, sprinkling in some arcane transitions and production techniques, this song is the perfect mascot for a typically atypical record.

MusicsWeek: Do you write your own lyrics, and where do you find inspiration for them?

DonnyJ: Yes, I write all my lyrics. I won't say I find inspiration, I would say inspiration finds me.

MusicsWeek: What do you do when you're facing creative blocks or challenges in the studio?

DonnyJ: I don't "force" myself to create anything. If I really feel like it, I will, if I don't, then I won't. Right now, I've gone about 3-4 months without writing any song, and that's fine. It doesn't frustrate me.

MusicsWeek: What kind of message or feeling do you hope to convey through your music?

DonnyJ: There's no message. I use music as an instrument of expression. It's a mirror into my internal milieu.

MusicsWeek: When performing live, what kind of connection do you aim to build with your audience?

DonnyJ: I perform as if tonight's the last night to live. I try to bring in the audience with that emotion and that energy emanates throughout my performance.

MusicsWeek: What’s the story behind the name of your latest release?

DonnyJ: To be honest, there isn't that much of a story. That's the word that stuck out in the hook and kept it as the title of the song.

MusicsWeek: Are there any recurring themes or ideas in your music that you’re particularly passionate about?

DonnyJ: I avoid repeating themes but sometimes I may use a particular arp rhythm that I would've used previously or I would build off of a chord progression that has stuck with me or I would use some tried-and-tested songwriting techniques to write my hooks. But one aspect that I've consistently held on to while creating any kind of music is to be honest. I don't talk about anything that shows me in a good or bad light. Like I alluded to previously, my music is merely a reflection of myself.
