Kushmay: I've always been passionate about music, and growing up in a Nigerian household, I was exposed to a wide range of genres and artists. However, it was my personal experiences, emotions, and struggles that ultimately inspired me to start making music. I found solace in music to express myself and tell my story.

Kushmay: My biggest musical influences are a fusion of Afropop, hip-hop, and R&B artists. I draw inspiration from artists like Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Drake, Kanye, and Kendrick Lamar. These artists have not only shaped my sound but also inspired me to push the boundaries of what's possible in the music industry.
MusicsWeek: How would you describe your sound in three words?
Kushmay: I would describe my sound in three words: Afropop, Energetic, and Soulful.
MusicsWeek: What’s the story behind your stage name?
Kushmay: My stage name, Kushmay, reflects my Nigerian heritage and my personal journey as an artist. Kushmay is a name that holds significant cultural and emotional value for me, and it represents the unique blend of sounds, styles, and experiences that I bring to my music.
MusicsWeek: Did you always know you wanted to pursue music, or did it happen unexpectedly?
Kushmay: While music has always been a passion of mine, I didn't always know that I wanted to pursue it as a career. Growing up, I faced various challenges and setbacks that made me question my abilities and doubts my dreams. However, with time, perseverance, and support from loved ones, I gained the confidence to pursue music full-time.
MusicsWeek: What’s your songwriting process like? Do you start with lyrics, a melody, or something else?
Kushmay: My songwriting process is often spontaneous and intuitive. Sometimes, I'll start with a melody or a chord progression, while other times, I'll begin with a lyrical idea or a personal experience that I want to express. I try to stay open to different creative approaches and allow the music to guide me.
MusicsWeek: Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics?
Kushmay: I find inspiration for my lyrics in my personal experiences, emotions, and observations. I'm drawn to storytelling and exploring themes that are relevant to my life and the lives of those around me. I also find inspiration in Nigerian culture, history, and mythology, which often informs my lyrics and music.
MusicsWeek: How do you handle writer’s block or creative slumps?
Kushmay: When faced with writer's block or creative slumps, I try to take a step back and recharge. I'll often engage in activities that stimulate my creativity, such as reading, watching movies, or exploring new places. I also make time for self-care and prioritize my mental and emotional well-being. Sometimes, I'll collaborate with other artists or producers to gain new perspectives and insights.
MusicsWeek: Do you produce your own music, or do you work with producers?
Kushmay: I work with producers to create my music. While I have some production skills, I prefer to focus on songwriting and vocals. I enjoy collaborating with producers who share my vision and can help bring my music to life.
MusicsWeek: Can you walk us through the making of your latest song?
Kushmay: My latest song, "Alive," was created in collaboration with my audio engineer John Stewart Jamieson. We started with a beat and a chord progression, and then I began working on the lyrics and melody. I wanted to create a song that captured the energy and resilience of the Nigerian spirit, and I drew inspiration from my personal experiences and emotions. The song went through several iterations before we finalized the production and mixing. I'm proud of how "Alive" turned out, and I'm excited to share it with the world.
