Lana Del Rey has posted a teaser of a track that fans recognize for a lyric aimed at Ethel Cain. In a short video shared on her Instagram page yesterday, Del Rey is seen driving while the song plays in the background, opening with the pointed line, “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post/Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose.” You can watch the clip on her Instagram page.
Although fragments of the song have surfaced online over the years, this is the most complete preview so far of what seems to be a finished studio version. Many fans believe the lyric refers to Cain’s rumored connection with Salem’s Jack Donoghue, who previously dated Del Rey. The Instagram reference is thought to allude to a pair of 2022 posts: one showing Del Rey and Donoghue outside a prison, and another featuring Cain with him near a dam. The track also contains the line “The most famous girl at the Waffle House,” which echoes the headline of a New York Times profile on Ethel Cain. Soon after that article, Del Rey was spotted playfully taking a mock shift at a Waffle House in Alabama. Cain herself is believed to have hinted at Del Rey in past social media activity.
Recently, Del Rey premiered new material at Stagecoach festival. These fresh songs are expected to appear on an upcoming album, which has been referred to by fans as either Lasso or The Right Person Will Stay.
