Skepta and Fred again.. have been working closely together in recent months. Skepta first appeared on the debut remix of Fred and PlaqueBoyMax’s track "Victory Lap," which leaned into more experimental territory. Following that version, three additional remixes were released, ending with a fourth that also featured Denzel Curry, Hanumankind, and That Mexican OT.
Now, Skepta and Fred are back with "Back 2 Back," which feels like a spiritual continuation of that earlier idea. The single is heavy-hitting, built on pounding bass and matched with Skepta’s sharp delivery. Their chemistry as producer and rapper shines through, and it leaves fans wondering what a complete Skepta project might sound like with Fred again.. behind the boards throughout.
This release also comes on the heels of Skepta’s back-and-forth with Joyner Lucas. Skepta stirred conversation by saying UK rappers would easily outperform US rappers in a battle. Around the same time, Drake echoed that sentiment during his Wireless Festival set in London, claiming that the UK currently has the best rappers in the world.
Joyner Lucas didn’t take Skepta’s comments lightly, and the two traded several diss records in response. While it was entertaining to watch, fans on both sides ultimately walked away with the same opinions they already held about their favorite artists.
Looking ahead, Skepta seems to be gearing up for his next album, Knife & Fork, which would be his first full-length project in more than five years. The LP has yet to drop, but anticipation is building as fans wait to see what direction he takes. In the meantime, "Back 2 Back" delivers plenty to hold listeners over until that moment comes.
