Artist Spotlight: CBIII

Brand’s inspiration for “I Won’t Quit” was intensely personal. Following the death of his parents at a young age, he was raised by his grandmother and then was placed in foster care. A recent visit found his grandmother’s memory fading; this was painful, considering that she had once been his biggest supporter.

This conversation with CBIII reminds us why true artistry never ages — it only deepens.

MusicsWeek: Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics and melodies?

CBIII:
I find inspiration for my lyrics through experiencing a severely traumatic event.

MusicsWeek: Have you ever had a dream to inspire a song or an album?

CBIII:
I actually have. I have dreamt of a certain melody that I kept hearing on repeat in my dream, and that led to me writing part of I won’t quit.

MusicsWeek: What’s your approach to creating a unique sound?

CBIII:
My approach to creating a unique sound. I don’t really have one. I just kind of do what I feel and hope that it comes out sounding good.

MusicsWeek: Have you experimented with different genres or styles in your music?

CBIII:
I have, I have. I tried making a fast beat song. I personally didn’t like it, but now I have a younger fan base that is demanding more upbeat songs.

MusicsWeek: What’s your favorite part of the recording process?

CBIII:
My favorite part of the recording process, probably I have to be when I’m really in the zone, and I’m rapping.

MusicsWeek: How do you stay motivated to keep creating music?

CBIII:  I don’t, there’s a lot of times when I really just wanna quit and say forget it or days I don’t get out of bed because I don’t wanna try anymore, but what helps me keep going is to remember my dream and how far I’ve come.

MusicsWeek: Can you share the story behind your latest single?

CBIII:
The story behind my latest single I won’t quit is I left my home/house that I just bought and went across the country, lived in a van with my dad just to support him and help him get a home so he can bring my mom home and a little that I knew her memory was already fading, and she kind of forgot me and no matter what I did it was never good enough so talking about it wasn’t helping so I made a song about it.

MusicsWeek: Are there any upcoming projects or releases you’re excited about?

CBIII:
Yeah, I’m working on a new song. I’m pretty excited about it. It’s probably gonna come out sometime soon

MusicsWeek: How did the process of creating your latest project differ from your previous work?

CBIII:
It was pretty much the same for the most part. I would have to say that I took my time releasing this song because it was so emotionally raw for me.

MusicsWeek: What message or theme do you hope listeners take away from your latest work?

CBIII:
The message I would like for the listeners to take away from the song would have to be that no matter how hard life gets you’re not alone there are people out there that are just like you that are also having a really hard time so I’ll just take it one day at a time put your faith in God and give him all your troubles and worries.
