Seventeen years after first stepping into the iconic Maida Vale Studios, Grammy Award winning band Mumford & Sons returned for Radio 2’s Piano Room Month. Joining Vernon Kay alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra, the band delivered an emotional set that blended their folk rock beginnings with a standout modern collaboration.
A Full Circle Performance
Their three track performance included the beloved classic "The Cave" as well as their newest single "The Banjo Song." The standout moment of the session, though, was a beautifully pared back cover of Taylor Swift’s "cowboy like me," taken from her 2020 album evermore.
The cover carried special meaning for the band. Marcus Mumford previously contributed backing vocals to the original recording, which took place at the group’s own studio. Speaking to Vernon Kay during the broadcast, Marcus said, “This is one of my favorite songs ever, actually.”
Collaborating with the Best
Even with years of touring and international acclaim behind them, the band admitted they felt some nerves before performing with the BBC Concert Orchestra. “We are stoked we have rarely had the opportunity to collaborate with any orchestra, and this is one of the best in the world,” they said. “It really is an honor.”
The appearance arrives as Mumford & Sons hint at a forthcoming album and new tour plans. Listeners can catch the full performance and interview on BBC Sounds, while video clips are available via BBC iPlayer and the Radio 2 YouTube channel.
Piano Room Month continues throughout the week on Vernon Kay’s mid morning show, currently the most listened to radio programme in the UK, with Alison Limerick and Mika set to perform next.
