Charlton Graham is not asking for permission.
The 22-year-old aspiring pop singer, based in the famed music city of Memphis, Tennessee, is making the music of his dreams. Those dreams are of kings and princes, angels and changelings, dragons and full moons.
All that imagery bursts forth in Graham’s music, like an energy that can’t be contained. That is the subject of the album’s 10th track, “Epic Energy.”
Cannot escape the energy inside me
Sometimes I feel like I am flying
Forget about the stress and be the best
And after that forget about the rest…
And it’s all gonna be epic!
Of the song, Graham says, “I wanted it to sound like one of those inspirational songs that makes you feel powerful inside. Like your presence and your energy can infect other people in a positive way. It’s kind of like a metaphor, like having a superpower. You can’t escape the energy inside you.”
Growing up in Arizona, then California, and now Tennessee, Graham says he was always “obsessed with music.” He says, “I’ve always had a desperate need for music. It was my escape point when things weren’t going my way.”
Graham styles himself mainly as a singer, though he plays a bit of piano as well. His first two albums, Unique and Never Ending Story, were made using the Launchpad application. Mixing and matching samples on the platform, he compiled more than 30 tracks across the two collections.
He wants it to be known that he was responsible for the music production from start to finish. He says, “I’m basically in charge of everything: the writing, the sounds, the ideas. It’s all me.”
True to the name of his first album of songs, he has a unique way of capturing vocals. Singing over the playback, he then records onto his phone. From there, the songs are launched out into the world. His is the extreme DIY ethos of the 21st century musical artist.
Graham wants to be as big as Ariana Grande. He doesn’t want to be told what to do with his life by his parents or anyone else. He says, “I don’t want to rely on other people to choose my career. I want to go my own way. I don’t want to look back one day and feel like I missed out on what I truly wanted to do.”
A creative person in many fields, from acting to music, Graham feels that now is the time to lean all the way into his music. So how can he break through in a world with millions of artists? By believing in himself completely. By telling his never ending story, and trusting the epic energy inside him.
