Artist Spotlight: AKA Ezzy
Raised in Broward, Fla., Ezzy draws inspiration from pop and internet culture, crafting a sound that is both culturally fluent and highly intentional. While citing influences like Nicki Minaj, Azealia Banks, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé, Ezzy insists her music remains distinctly her own: “Even if you cite those inspirations, when you listen to my music, anyone can say, yes, this is Ezzy.”
In this exclusive Q&A, AKA Ezzy opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.
MusicsWeek: What inspired you to begin your journey in music?
AKA Ezzy: Music has been part of my life since I was really young, and it still shapes who I am today. Whether I was singing, playing an instrument, or dancing, I was always drawn to anything artistic, especially music.
As I got older, I realized creating music was not as out of reach as I once thought. A lot of that came from watching my brother make music and release music. Seeing him actually do it made it feel possible. So I started making my first songs on GarageBand, just experimenting and figuring things out as I went.
MusicsWeek: Can you share a favorite memory that stands out from your musical experiences?
AKA Ezzy: One memory that really sticks with me is playing one of my early songs for my close friends for the first time. It was not perfectly mixed and definitely not “media” ready, but the way they reacted meant everything.
They were repeating lyrics, laughing at lines they liked, hyping it up in real time. It was the first time something that started as a random idea in my head felt real outside of me. That moment made me realize how powerful music can be when other people connect to it.
MusicsWeek: Is there a particular album or artist that has significantly influenced your music?
AKA Ezzy:I genuinely believe you take something from everything and everyone you come across. I consume a lot of music and media, and all of it influences me in some way.
The five artists I will always credit as my biggest inspirations are Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Azealia Banks, and Ayesha Erotica. Whether it is creativity, sonics, songwriting, performance, or just overall presence, they have all influenced me heavily. I would not be the same artist without them.
MusicsWeek: What does your songwriting process typically look like?
AKA Ezzy:I usually start with a random line or title that pops into my head. I will literally think, “I should name a song this, and it should be about this,” and build from there.
After that, I figure out a melody or flow and shape the lyrics around that. Once I have something solid, I run it by my “team,” which is really my trusted circle of friends. We revise together, throw out ideas, and punch up lines. It is always fun and collaborative. It never feels stiff or forced.
MusicsWeek: What’s one of the most creative or groundbreaking things you’ve done in your work?
AKA Ezzy: I always co-produce my work, but one time I produced a beat entirely by myself using my voice as the base for everything. All the percussion and textures started vocal,y and then I manipulated them into a full instrumental.
I am not sure if it will ever be released, at least not anytime soon, because it is still rough around the edges. But sometimes you create just to create. Not everything needs to be shared. Sometimes it is just about scratching that creative itch, and I am completely fine with that.
MusicsWeek: How do you explore and incorporate new sounds or styles into your music?
AKA Ezzy: Honestly, I try everything. My mind works in weird ways, and I constantly get random “what if” ideas. Instead of overthinking them, I just test them out.
I think embracing that inner kid is important. As people grow up, they become more hesitant. The ideas are still there, but the fear of looking silly or failing gets louder. I try not to let that stop me. If it feels interesting, I experiment with it.
MusicsWeek: What do you find most challenging about being a musician?
AKA Ezzy: Not feeling like my music is good enough, especially when I compare it to other artists or even to my own previous work.
When you really care about what you are creating, you constantly want to outdo yourself. The songwriting has to be sharper. The delivery has to hit harder. The production has to sound bigger. That mindset can push you to improve, but it can also trap you if you are not careful.
MusicsWeek: What has been the toughest obstacle in your career so far?
AKA Ezzy: Perfectionism. Not just with the music, but with everything around it.
I want the song to be at 110 percent. The look at 110 percent. The social media edits at 110 percent. When you are independent and handling every aspect yourself, it is easy to get stuck trying to perfect every detail. I once spent two weeks editing a single post and had to tell myself to relax.
At some point, you just have to release. Of course, you should try your absolute best, but you cannot sit on every single project for months waiting for it to feel flawless. You grow by putting the work out and leveling up the next time.
MusicsWeek: How do you engage with your audience and maintain a strong fan base?
AKA Ezzy: It feels natural to me. I do not really see them as “fans.” I see them as my friends, my “homegirls”. And I do not mean that in a corny way.
I interact with them the same way I would with friends. I joke with them, share thoughts, post behind the scenes moments, support them. They return that energy. It feels mutual. I think that is why they are so supportive. It feels like rooting for someone in your circle, not just streaming a random artist and it really does come natural to me especially because everyone who I have interacted with so far has been extremely sweet, funny and supportive, it means the world to me.
MusicsWeek: What is your approach to writing lyrics that truly connect with listeners?
AKA Ezzy:I always write for myself first. I am not trying to target a specific listener or chase a specific sound.
I am a versatile artist. If I build an audience based only on one specific style, the second I pivot, those listeners might leave for someone who stays in that lane. So instead of selling just a song, I present myself. My humor, my perspective, my personality. That way, people connect to me as an artist overall and can grow with me as the sound evolves.
