Yungblud says his audience has changed in ways he never expected, revealing that his shows now attract everyone from alternative queer fans to truck drivers, showing just how much the project has grown over the years.
The 28 year old musician, who is currently traveling on his IDOLS world tour, told The i newspaper that the evolution of his fanbase mirrors the way his identity as Yungblud has developed.
According to the singer, the project is no longer connected to the “juvenile, naïve, political” version of himself that many people originally associated with the name, and he now feels more comfortable simply being himself.
Yungblud, whose real name is Dominic Harrison, explained: “Yungblud has become many different things to many different people, which means I can now be more myself."
He also reflected on how far the name has come since his early days growing up in northern England.
“There are many different iterations of Yungblud,” he said.
“I didn’t know if Yungblud was going to be a Ziggy Stardust character, but the name is now bigger than a bright kid from the north of England. Even the f****** customs officials at 6am between Buffalo and Toronto know who Yungblud is.”
As his audience continues to expand, Yungblud admitted his ambitions have become even bigger too.
He shared: “They’ve accelerated because now I want to walk out onto a stadium stage.
“That’s the dream. I’ve done arenas, I’ve done festivals, but I want to be a stadium artist.”
The singer also addressed some of the labels and assumptions that have followed him throughout his career, saying he never tried to position himself as the “future of rock.”
He explained: “I am a middle-class kid, I never claimed I wasn’t, and I’m just doing my thing. I’m an English kid who loves his country."
Even with the changing crowd at his concerts, Yungblud said he loves seeing such different groups of people enjoying the same experience together.
“They’re together and they’re having a good time. I f****** love that.”
