Voltaire’s Ghost Reveals the Bittersweet Side of Gothic Rock with ‘‘Till The Break of Day’

Voltaire’s Ghost, a gothic and rock trio with a penchant for love, death, and the sounds in between, delivers its latest single, the bittersweet melody of “’Till The Break of Day.”

Hailing from Western Colorado, Voltaire’s Ghost merges the creative drive of Ruby Juhl (vocals), Joshua Eggstaff (drums), and Magnus (guitars and production). Since 2023, Voltaire’s Ghost has toured throughout California, Texas, and Colorado, bringing their unassuming talent to the main stage at several renowned venues.

Riding off the success of Death Becomes You, their 2025 record, the group went on to place as a Semi-Finalist — out of more than 70,000 contestants — in America’s Next Top Hitmaker, sponsored by the Rolling Stone. What came next was a handful of hit singles leading to their 13-track album, Black Petals Fallen.

Recorded in Colorado and mixed in Los Angeles, the album was engineered by Grammy-nominated Joe Ayoub. The full-length album presents a soundscape of the band’s cumulative work. “‘Till The Break of Day” is the album’s fourth single and a deviation from the album’s general scope.

Recounting a bittersweet tale of a couple fated to share only one night together, the single continues the band’s exploration of love and death, two of their favorite topics to bring to life. “While the album is more goth, this single is different,” shares Voltaire’s Ghost. “It’s not necessarily goth – it’s more of a bittersweet, romantic number, a slow dance number.”

The original song came to Magnus years prior to the recorded, present-day version. When Ruby and Josh encountered the original demo, they connected with it in their own way, breathing life into a song waiting for its wings. “It was a really rough sketch,” says Magnus of the original. “I always had it in my mind that it could be done better.” It seems what was really needed was the combined creative powers of the trio. “Both Ruby and Josh did an amazing job on it,” Magnus adds. “It went from a rough sketch to a beautiful painting.”

Preserving the original lyrics, Ruby’s phrasing and delivery elevated the final version we hear today. As for Josh, he found the first draft to have an easy opening for his addition of drums. “This one was easy to jump into and start playing — it captured me right way,” he says. “It’s my favorite song on the album, even though it’s a softer song.”

“It was always a bittersweet song,” shares the group. “But now it’s more sweet than bitter.” Voltaire’s Ghost hopes listeners come away with the importance of holding on to the people we meet in the rare instance that they feel like home from the first moment. The song also delivers the duality of love lost — was it better to have love and lost or never to have loved at all? Lord Tennyson and Voltaire’s Ghost have much to debate.

“‘Till The Break of Day” is scheduled for release on August 14. Black Petals Fallen is available for digital purchase on Bandcamp; a vinyl pre-order can be placed on the band’s website.

The single is available on all streaming platforms, with promotional support from Starlight PR.
