Jake Bugg Lets His Guard Down After a Challenging Few Years

Jake Bugg has poured the difficulties he faced during the "last couple of years" into his deeply personal new record Alamo.

The 32 year old artist, who was compared to Bob Dylan after finding success with Lightning Bolt in 2012, has revealed the successor to 2024's A Modern Day Distraction. He acknowledged that life has been "tough" since releasing his previous project.

He explained in a statement: “After all the years of touring and making records, it just felt like the right time to look inward. The last couple of years have been tough for me and I’ve had a lot of struggles. I’m trying to navigate those and figure out where they stem from.

“Alamo was only going to work if I was going to be honest and be as vulnerable as possible. I’ve always had a lot of defenses and barriers around me. I thought it was time to bring those down.”

Lead track Never Can Tell was inspired by his upbringing, which taught him to question people's intentions and made it difficult for him to decide whom he could rely on.

He shared: “It’s really f****** hard to know who to trust in this day and age, especially growing up how I did and having to be vigilant and observant of the people around you.

“The song is about that. Life throws so many parallels at you and it’s hard to know which way to go. People tell you different things and you’ve just got to go with what your gut tells you.”

Alamo finds the musician reconnecting with his "folk-leaning roots".

Promotional material describes the project: "Alamo sees Jake return to his folk-leaning roots - raw, real and unguarded. Now 32, the album is an 11-track testament to his matured craft as a songwriter and an open-hearted revelation of his journey as a man through love and loneliness and back again. It’s an album that rolls along with pure but lush and authentic country music arrangements that get straight to the heart of the matter with nothing to hide behind."

Another song, Day By Day, is presented as a "finger pickin’ good Dylan and [Leonard] Cohen-inspired rootsy roadsong".

The collection begins with When The Night, where the singer and songwriter considers "what does isolation really feel like and lead you to do?”

Meanwhile, Alamo explores the "pains of being in a relationship that’s crumbling around you".

Alongside revealing the record, Jake confirmed a run of intimate performances throughout the UK and Europe in 2027. The schedule begins in Manchester on February 6 and continues with ten shows across the UK and Ireland, including a homecoming appearance at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall. It concludes at London’s Union Chapel on February 26.

Supporters will have access to advance tickets beginning at 10am BST on Friday (04.09.26), before the general sale starts on September 11.

Before then, Jake will travel to Nashville to lead the Musicians Corner lineup at Centennial Park on September 18 as part of Americana Fest.
