Artist Spotlight: Sam Welch

Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter Sam Welch brings more than two decades of introspective songwriting, immersive vocals, and personal storytelling to his latest single, “Satellite.” Welch has developed a distinctive sound over the years and a prolific catalog rooted in authenticity, transformation, and emotional connection.

In this exclusive Q&A, Sam Welch opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.

MusicsWeek: Every artist has a defining moment. Looking back, what experience shaped the artist you've become today?

Sam Welch: I had a nervous breakdown at the age of 19 while a college student at Columbia University. Much of my life since then has been spent working on recovery. Emotional dysregulation has evolved into having a spiritual outlook on life, leading to my treatment of themes about spiritual transcendence in my music.

MusicsWeek: If someone heard your music for the first time today, what would you hope they understood about you before the final song ends?

Sam Welch: That I am a deeply faith-oriented musician; I believe in the healing process (both emotional and spiritual).

MusicsWeek: Your music often reflects different chapters of your life. Which chapter are you living in right now?

Sam Welch: I’m looking back on my life with perspective and have gotten some distance from the struggles I’ve faced, while also looking toward the future with hope and optimism

MusicsWeek: Has success changed the way you create, or simply given you more freedom to create honestly?

Sam Welch: Success has given me the reassurance that I’m on the right track as far as resonating with my listeners about what I write about. This motivates me to continue to evolve my work on exploring the overlapping worlds of emotion and spirit; I have much material to continue to explore.

MusicsWeek: What part of yourself do you think listeners discover through your music that they wouldn't find anywhere else?

Sam Welch: I write about the importance of having hope when in difficult times. In my music, people can explore the idea of maintaining a positive attitude while in the struggles of life.

MusicsWeek: If your catalog told the story of your life, what would the opening chapter be called?

Sam Welch: "My holy break”

MusicsWeek: What keeps you hungry after everything you've already accomplished?

Sam Welch: The desire to grow my fanbase and to continue to perform live for as long as I am physically able to.

MusicsWeek: What misconception do people have about you that your music quietly corrects?

Sam Welch: That I’m a young musician—I’m 60 years old.

MusicsWeek: What's a lyric you've written that still gives you chills today?

Sam Welch: “There’s a hole in the sky, and I gotta wonder why”

MusicsWeek: How has your relationship with songwriting evolved over the years?

Sam Welch: I started using songwriting primarily as an emotional outlet; this evolved into treating concrete themes (spiritual transcendence/emotional dysregulation). I’ve also gotten better at conveying/creating/developing metaphors that treat these themes.
