NEW YORK - O. Masters is on a mission. Growing up in Jamacia, he knows first-hand how young men can turn to a life of crime and violence. “Music is a way out of crime and violence for young men in Jamacia,” said O. Masters.
Focusing on helping the youth stems from when O. Masters discovered his Black Night sound. “Growing up in Jamacia, I am used to the old-time sound-to-sound systems coming together. Other young guys would come with their sound systems, and an audience would gather to judge who played the best songs,” he said.
In numerous DJ clashes, O. Masters realized his Black Night sound, and the fire for music was ignited, along with becoming a crowd favorite.
In 2012 he started his label, Omasters Entertainment, and the rest is history. Under his brand, he has released many projects, mainly as a producer and as a rapper and songwriter.
The latest release by Omasters Entertainment is “Give Me Your Heart,” by 15-year-old phenom Thyrieke. With soul and R&B velvety vibes, Thyrieke demonstrates there is no age limit to deliver an international sound with heartfelt emotions.
For O. Masters, the songwriting process reflects his genius. “I heard the rhythm and the beat, and I was inspired to write that song,” he said. “I keep singing it in my mind and jot something down, and before I knew it, I had a line, then a verse and chorus.”
Interestingly, O. Masters wrote “Give Me Your Heart” about his first childhood crush. With two versions available, the original and remix, the song does not focus on typical rap elements such as guns, sex, and drugs. It is a wholesome, sensual ballad that appeals to all ages. It is simply a timeless, classic hit, like Baby Face, Smokey Robinson, and Whitney Houston songs.
With a music video depicting what love is, “Give Me Your Heart” is a perfect introduction to Thyrieke and why O. Masters is “mastering” the art of inspiring youths and offering a way out of poverty and crime.
“Music is a part of me,” he said, focusing on producing quality music over quantity. “I want to make sure that everything is perfect. When you hear the song, you know its quality music and not hard on the ear.”
Taking inspiration from hip hop, reggae, and R&B genres, O. Masters loves music with a “real soul,” like the classic from the Temptations. “I’m producing and performing cultural music. Even though I’m Jamaican and lean to reggae, I love old-school R&B music,” he explained.
O. Masters will return to solo work with Guinney Pepper and friends with an upcoming album. The single “Just Another Nickel” will drop in March. However, O. Masters fans do not have to wait until then. “Summer Is Here” by O. Masters is currently available on platforms.
While “Give Me Your Heart” is a springboard for Thyrieke into the music industry, it reflects O. Masters’ promise. “Having family members fall by the wayside due to guns, my aim and desire are to change that,” he stated. “If I can bend the curve and change the direction to make the world a better place through music and help the younger youths have a future, that is my purpose.”
With more songs to be recorded, the future is bright for young Jamaican artists to enter the music industry, courtesy of O. Masters.
