Kid Hendrixx, born Cameron Hendricks, is a young, versatile artist bringing a new flavor of dance-pop hits to center stage. A fan of emo trapp, Kid Hendrixx transitioned to dance music and continues to blend genres to create his own unique sound. His latest hit, “Dream Girl,” is a dance track sure to set the mood for summer parties.
The fourth of six siblings, the San Antonio, Texas, native was quiet as a child yet driven to entertain people. His older sister introduced him to 80s pop music and culture, which instilled a love in him of the artistic nature of music. The young artist was (and continues to be) particularly inspired by Michael Jackson. “Before I write a song, I’ll turn on Michael Jackson and watch his videos. He was one of the greatest entertainers and that’s what I want to be—a great entertainer.”
Life hasn’t always been kind to the young artist, who woke up surrounded by teachers and emergency medical services in 2012 after suffering a seizure and ending up in the hospital with a broken femur and cracked growth plate and signs of acute kidney disease. Kid Hendrixx spent weeks in the hospital undergoing a kidney transplant and subsequent complications, launching him into depression and loneliness that were particularly impactful at such a young age. This experience inspired his first song, “Everlasting,” which was based off his life at the time.
After struggles with bullying later in high school, Kid Hendrixx learned resilience through pursuing his passion—no matter what anyone had to say about it. He went on to perform at high school pep rallies, sports games, and at the courtyard during lunch, until it was clear that everyone knew who he was. “I believe in manifestation—what you put in comes back to you,” says Hendrixx of the drive that propelled him throughout his teen years.
During his senior year of high school, his friend and mentor, J. Ryan, invited him on tour with “Teen Nation Tour,” which helped the young artist develop stage presence and crowd interaction skills. Two months into touring throughout Texas and Louisiana, Kid Hendrixx was able to reflect on how far he had come as both an artist and entertainer. He fell in love with telling a story and connecting with people through shared experience and emotion.
“The only person who can tell the story is you,” says Kid Hendrixx of how every person has their own unique way of expressing art. When it comes to writing music, Hendrixx has a tried-and-true process. “I’m a melody guy. For me to make a song, there has to be a catchy melody. I find a beat, listen to it, and if I can’t put a catchy melody to it, I won’t use it,” says Kid Hendrixx. “I could sit there for hours finding the right catchy melody then write as I go.” Kid Hendrixx starts with the hook, then creates the verse. “I get writer’s block every time I get to the verse,” says the artist. “But the chorus I can come up with in five minutes and it’ll be catchy.” When he’s ready to record, the artist likes to “dig deep into my mind to come up with something trippy.”
Kid Hendrixx’s latest single, “Dream Girl,” is about a dream he had regarding a girl who he falls in love with in the dream. “To this day, I know what she looks like—it’s a spiritual thing,” explains Hendrixx. The chorus explains what happened in his dream—“dancing, feeling the groove” while he watches the dream girl move and hopes the dream never ends.
Of his life journey, Kid Hendrixx is proudest of the fact that he’s made it this far on kidney failure—and he’s not stopping anytime soon. This will be a busy year for Kid Hendrixx, who is set to release his next single, “Don’t Understand Love” in early May. Summer will see the release of more singles with an upbeat summer vibe that people will love and videos as well.
