Hip-hop artist SkrillaBaby brings fans his latest single, “Crossroads,” to prepare them for additional authentic music coming their way. Blending catchy lyrics with high-quality sound, the artist is all about “showcasing the art with lyrics people can relate to.” Influenced by artists including Future, Lil Durk, Lil Baby, and 50Cent, the artist uses his own version of melodic sounds and catchy lyrics to captivate listeners. SkrillaBaby aspires to be a “musical jack in the box.” “You don’t know what you’re going to get,” he describes. “That’s the best part. I can give you love songs; something that can put you in your feelings; songs about a female; things going on in life… I use my voice to reach people in different ways. If you want to turn up, I can give you that, too.”
Born and raised in Salisbury, Maryland, the artist later moved to El Paso, Texas, where he launched his music career in 2016. In 2019, SkrillaBaby went on to open for DaBaby at the El Paso Coliseum, solidifying his start as an experienced performer. Since his inaugural opener, the artist has released several singles and projects. Now based in California, SkrillaBaby recently dropped his newest single, “Crossroads,” with an accompanying music video shot by Julien York that amassed over 26,000 views.
The artist prides himself on not sounding the same across his tracks. Looking for inspiration for his writing, SkrillaBaby reflects on what he’s been through in life, from a rough upbringing to foster care to losing his mother a few years back. Coming from a difficult neighborhood and taking in his surroundings has also given SkrillaBaby plenty to write about. When it comes to finding the right beat, the musician works with ATM, a producer group based out of New York. SkrillaBaby has the ability to “know what type of direction I’m heading in when I hear the beat.” Essentially, songs form themselves when the vibe is right.
As many of us are, SkrillaBaby is his own biggest critic. “I’m never satisfied with my music. I’m happy in the moment when I make something but 9/10 times I’m not satisfied—I feel like I could do more. The people I come across—that’s the best part about music. And knowing that my music can touch strangers in a way that they can relate to what I say.”
Up next for the artist are more music videos and music making. While he’s busy preparing show material and more tracks for fans to enjoy, be sure to check out “Crossroads” to keep the energy alive.
