Music's Week: What inspired you to become a musician, and what was your earliest musical memory
Norman Collins: My earliest musical memories are listening to a juke box in Desoto Missouri, in a cafe. around 1953. It was country music. I loved the rhythm of music and that inspired me to buy a guitar and learn On Top of Old Smokey.
Music's Week: How do you approach songwriting, and what do you draw inspiration from?
Norman Collins: I approach songwriting by trying to find a fun rhythm or chord pattern on the guitar. The inspiration comes from the fun of a new melody to that rhythm.
Music's Week: Can you walk us through your creative process when crafting a new song?
Norman Collins: My creative process comes first with the chords or rhythm, then comes the melody and finally the words.
Music's Week: Who are some of your biggest influences, and how have they shaped your music?
Norman Collins: My main influences were the songs from the sixties, all the top 40 being played then. Howlin Wolf and BB King were always a favorite also.
Music's Week: What's the story behind your latest release, and what do you hope listeners take away from it?
Norman Collins: The story behind the release was a new version of an old song I have been doing for years called I Wanna Rule Somebody. It is about people using other people for their personal gain.
Music's Week: How do you balance staying true to your artistic vision with the pressure to appeal to a wider audience?
Norman Collins: Fortunately for me my songs are just written for my enjoyment, but seem to please others as well. My artistic vision is just to have a fun song.
Music's Week: What's been the most surreal or unexpected experience you've had as a musician?
Norman Collins: My most surreal and unexpected moment in music was when a club owner pulled out his gun and threatened to shoot someone in the band if we didn't stop at 1'30.
Music's Week: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what do you value most about your relationship with them?
Norman Collins: I need a way to find a way to connect with my fans. I will start to use Facebook and other sites.
Music's Week: What advice would you give to aspiring musicians just starting out in the industry?
Norman Collins: My advice to aspiring musicians is to learn how to deal with rejection because that is what you will get for the most part. Also don't try and be a popstar, have a lot of good band practices first, that can be very rewarding.
Music's Week: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the next year or so, and what can we expect from your upcoming projects?
Norman Collins: Looking ahead, I hope to start touring and continue writing . Thanks, Therese and Starlight for your support.
