MusicsWeek: How did you get started in music?
Devon Elijah: I always sang and danced as a child and kept at it through school. Performing throughout that time pushed me to make my own music. My first track that was released on platforms that I was a part of was Personal by Starvidence.
MusicsWeek: What inspired you to become a musician?
Devon Elijah: I've always loved to sing, dance, and make music so when I found out that people could live off of making music, I instantly knew that was what I wanted to do. From what people told me, I felt confident in what I could do so I just went with it.
My mom was also a huge inspiration for me growing up. Hearing her sing made me sing, especially in the car with the radio blasting.
MusicsWeek: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Devon Elijah: Many influences have inspired me. Beyoncé is definitely a huge influence on me. Brandy Norwood, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Utada Hikaru, UVERworld, Nishino Kana, Chris Brown, and so many more artists that I grew up listening to and seeing perform on a stage. They influenced me by showing me different genres and sounds.
MusicsWeek: What non-musical influences (books, movies, art, etc.) inspire your work?
Devon Elijah: I love anime so the storyline and art of some of my favorites like Naruto, Sailor Moon, DragonBall Z, Love Live, and Bleach have inspired me to never give up and to tap into different levels of my abilities. To push myself to new heights no matter what. To learn from my failures and make better choices from them.
MusicsWeek: Is there a particular song or album that has significantly influenced your career?
Devon Elijah: "When You Believe" by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Ever since a child I loved that song and the lyrics mean so much to me to this day.
MusicsWeek: Can you walk us through your typical songwriting process?
Devon Elijah: For me, there's no one process, but in most cases, I feel something. Whether it be joy, sadness, anger, being fond of someone/something, or any emotion I usually try to describe what I'm feeling and why. I'll hum something until I like what I hear and tie the expressions in to make lyrics. Based on the feeling I'll make a beat that vibes with the emotion and lyrics and send it to Alexander Herring, my producer.
MusicsWeek: Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics and melodies?
Devon Elijah: I usually sing out my feelings. Depending on the style of music is where I draw inspiration from for lyrics and melodies. If I'm happy I'll do something upbeat and pop-sounding, but that can easily translate to R&B depending on the subject and how I want to sound while singing it.
MusicsWeek: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Devon Elijah: I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, drawing, reading, studying language, binge-watching a good show, and learning something new daily.
MusicsWeek: What’s one piece of advice you wish you could give your younger self?
Devon Elijah: I would tell my younger self, "No matter what, you are special, and do not give into other's opinions. Follow your heart, trust yourself, and never give up. I love you."
MusicsWeek: How do you engage with your fans online and offline?
Devon Elijah: Online I am interacting through the comments and likes, trying to respond to as many people as I can. Offline I love talking to people face to face, taking photos, and creating memories.
