The Marías’ lead singer, Maria Zardoya, saw her vision come alive during the band’s recent Jimmy Kimmel Live performance. Their song “Sienna,” from the latest album Submarine, reflects on the idea of having a child and noticing familiar traits in them. Onstage, Zardoya was joined by a little girl with the same jet-black hair and bangs. “I feel seen,” she sang. “Only through you.”
As the performance continued, nine more children stepped out across the stage to sing backing harmonies, joining her for the lines, “Ooh, Sienna/Would’ve been cute/Ooh, Sienna/Would look just like you.” The stage was filled with smoke and soft haze, creating a dreamlike quality that underscored the fleeting nature of the song.
Submarine was released in May 2024 and includes the singles “Run Your Mouth,” “Lejos De Ti,” and “If Only” / “No One Noticed.” Just last month, Zardoya revealed her debut solo record, Not for Radio.
“I wanted to explore on my own what it meant to love and to lose,” she said at the time. “And I keep asking myself the question: Is love worth the pain? If there’s a pain that only love can cause — the ache of someone’s absence, of knowing that they once lived there inside your home, tangible and tender — but now reside only inside your memory. What do you think, Is love worth the pain? I’m ready to find out.”
She reassured fans that the Marías are still going strong. “I love making music as the Marías, and nothing will ever change that,” she said. Later this month, the band will return to the road for their upcoming tour. Earlier this year, they released the singles “Back to Me” and “Nobody New,” and they also appeared on Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s track “Ojas Tristes.”
