Artist Spotlight: Joesph Blue

“Music helps moods. It can bring you up or bring you down. It all depends on the situation. I wanted to release this one first because this is my story. This is my truth.” Gary said.

In this exclusive Q&A, Joesph Blue opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.

MusicsWeek: What originally drew you toward making music as a form of expression?

Joesph Blue:
Growing up as a kid in South Louisiana, life was filled with very unique moments. Music became the natural way to capture how I was raised. I realized that instead of just keeping memories to myself, putting them into lyrics was the best way to process everything including the good and the bad.

MusicsWeek: How do you usually know when an idea is worth developing into a full song or project?

Joesph Blue:
It always starts with a specific feeling or a memory of a particular day. I don't overthink whether it is the "right" thing to say. I just start putting the pieces and dates together in my mind. If that raw feeling transforms naturally into something that stays on my mind, I know it is a song that other people will want to hear.

MusicsWeek: How would you describe the qualities that define your sound right now?

Joesph Blue:
My sound lives right at the intersection of modern country and the more honest storytelling that red dirt has. It is honest and rough at its core and completely driven by real-life experiences.

MusicsWeek: What was the core intention behind this release when you first started working on it?

Joesph Blue:
The core intention was to lay my personal life out. This project is a timeline of my relationships, my childhood roots, and the reality of everyday life. I wanted to build something completely authentic based on the highs or the lows.

MusicsWeek: What kind of connection do you hope listeners take away from your music?

Joesph Blue:
I want listeners to hear their own lives in my songs. When I sing about the ups and downs, the early dating days, or the quiet date nights, I want people to feel a sense that they aren’t alone. I hope they realize that the messy parts of life are the ones most worth singing about.

MusicsWeek: What are you most interested in exploring next, creatively or sonically?

Joesph Blue:
I want to dig even deeper into my culture while keeping the production energy of today's country. Creatively I want to find moments from my past and use them to give people not only truth but possibly some advice with it as well.

MusicsWeek: How has your perspective on success changed over time?

Joesph Blue:
Success used to feel like a far off goal, but now it is much easier picturing it. Being married for almost 20 years and building a life teaches you what actually matters. Today, success is just having the freedom to put a real feelings into a song and watching it connect with real people.

MusicsWeek: What has experience taught you about protecting your creative vision?

Joesph Blue:
It has taught me to trust my gut. I have learned that there is no single "right" way to write a song. The best thing I can do for my music is to just put it together exactly how I feel it, without letting outside opinions hinder the truth of the story that is being told.

MusicsWeek: What kind of growth feels most meaningful to you at this stage of your journey?

Joesph Blue:
The most meaningful growth is just showing the whole truth and leaving nothing out. Standing on a stage or releasing a track that details 20 years of marriage both the beautiful date nights and the tough times takes a lot of comfort in your own skin. Embracing that honesty is my biggest growth.

MusicsWeek: What kind of impact do you hope your music leaves over time?

Joesph Blue:
I hope my music leaves a legacy of genuine, and honest storytelling. In the future, I want people to look back at them as honest time capsules of hard truth that is a mix of the good, the bad, and the everyday. I also have my next Song Heaven’s Got a View coming out on the 18th of this month. I had 17 songs completed and more on the way with Beaird Music Group Nashville and Eli, Jim, Rob and Tytus. About every 6 weeks we will try to release a song under the names either Joesph Blue and BlackSheepRecordsMusicLLC so stay tuned for more soulful, truthful music.
