MusicWeek Staff: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Will Preston: I love and respect so many artists. I’ve always focused on my individual artistry and made it a point to maintain my uniqueness, but undoubtedly I’ve embraced many elements from those influential artists. Singers who can command a stage with their voice alone really connect with me. People like John Legend, Alicia Keys, Luther Vandross, Gladys Knight, Aretha, Whitney, Usher, Michael Buble, and so many others. I could really go on and on.
MusicWeek Staff: When/How did you become interested in music?
Will Preston: Music is such a central part of me that I don’t remember becoming interested. It’s just always been there. I’ve always connected to rhythm and melody.
MusicWeek Staff: How does this song "Of Course I Lied" differ with your previous song?
Will Preston: Of Course I Lied is a slight diversion from my other songs because it grabs an often undisclosed aspect of love. It focuses on dealing with the admission of wrong. Those are things that we often want to run away from. We generally want to focus on the euphoric elements of love, which of course, bring a certain emotion. But there’s more to love, and I wanted to briefly capture that sentiment as well.
MusicWeek Staff: What skills/personal attributes are most important to being successful?
Will Preston: Number one, I believe you should have a passion for it. You can be successful and not be passionate about something, but the passion is what brings you happiness. Ambition, perseverance, consistency. All of those things drive success as well.
MusicWeek Staff: How important do you think video is to your music?
Will Preston: I think visuals tell a story, which can add relevancy to any song. Of Course I Lied is strong lyrically. It’s a bold song that allows the listener to walk away with their own imagery. You can’t listen to the song and not imagine what is taking place. A mental video is being created in that moment.
MusicWeek Staff: What did you hope to achieve with your music video?
Will Preston: We are currently working on a video release. It’s an emotional song, and the goal is to relay those emotions through the video.
MusicWeek Staff: How would you describe your new video to any potential new fan?
Will Preston: I’ll just say stay tuned.
MusicWeek Staff: What set your music apart? What is unique, or at least uncommon?
Will Preston: I’m the real R&B that everyone is saying no longer exists. There are a few of us giving that feel good R&B music to music lovers. I think my music is unique because I remain true to who I am as an artist. I don’t chase trends and fads. I create what feels good to me, and I’m grateful that it connects with music lovers worldwide.
MusicWeek Staff: Has your music career journey had a deliberately direction or did it simply gradually evolve in whatever direction it found?
Will Preston: I was never deliberate about anything but making good music. That’s all I wanted to do. Create great music that I could be proud of at the end of the day. I’m beyond grateful for everyone who has connected with me on this musical journey from fans, producers, singers, writers, DJ’s, bloggers, everybody! In many ways the journey is just beginning. It feels good.
