Exclusive Interview with Masque

MusicWeek Staff: Who are your biggest musical influences?
MasqueNo artist has influenced my style (and life) like Lady Gaga; from her use of rock-inspired synth-dance to themes of gay rights, her music has heavily infused my style. I would be remiss to not mention Queen as well, whose glam-rock and memorable harmonies has made a lasting impression on me.

MusicWeek Staff: When/How did you become interested in music?
MasqueI’ve been interested in music since I was young, singing along to Queen and Britney Spears. Over the years, I’ve learned to play piano, write songs and sing; however, I didn’t fully commit myself to the pursuit of music until 2020. It was during lockdown that I re-evaluated my entire life, taking apart everything I thought I wanted, and when I had put the pieces back together, I realized there was no passion higher than becoming a singer.

MusicWeek Staff: How does this song "Sunhat" differ with your previous song?
MasqueFirstly, Sunhat is much more upbeat than most of my songs, which have a range of emotion from sorrowful to joyful. Secondly, it focuses more on a pop/electronica sound, rather than an experiment rock or rock/pop sound towards which i usually gravitate,

MusicWeek Staff: What skills/personal attributes are most important to being successful?
MasqueFor everyone out there, perseverance is the most important skill — sticking to your goals and moving forward no matter the roadblocks. Beyond that, everyone has some skill, or perhaps privilege, that they need to find and be able to leverage in order to be successful.

MusicWeek Staff: How important do you think video is to your music?
MasqueVideo is a fair bit important, as a music video is another fun way to get audience attention. Additionally, with newer forms of visual media like tiktok, video provides more and more chances to go viral.

MusicWeek Staff: What did you hope to achieve with your music video?
MasqueI hoped to encapsulate the joy that my song Sunhat exudes — from the peaceful beach setting to the excitement of tossing my sunhat in the air.

MusicWeek Staff: How would you describe your new video to any potential new fan?
MasqueThe Sunhat Music Video is a peaceful yet lively experience that pulls you into a soft reverie while exposing you to a beautiful electronica-pop song.

MusicWeek Staff: What set your music apart? What is unique, or at least uncommon?
MasqueAs a whole, my music is much more emotion and experience focused than most rock and pop music currently available. My songs explores a wider range of emotion and sound, from moody synth-pop to uplifting folk-rock and everything thing between. And of course, my unusual voice always stands out.

MusicWeek Staff: Has your music career journey had a deliberately direction or did it simply gradually evolve in whatever direction it found?
MasqueWhen I first started my journey, I had no plans, and simply went where the music took me. After releasing a few songs, however, I began to figure out the direction I wanted to go, bringing somewhat taboo topics (such as neurodivergence and lgbt+ issues) into mainstream music while using my set of sounds. As such, i now have a much clearer direction.

MusicWeek Staff: Where can potential fans find out more about you?
MasqueYou can follow me on tiktok or instagram @masquemusique , stream me anywhere you stream music by searching for my album ‘Masqued Emotions’ or ‘Masque Sunhat’, or visit my website at www.masquedemotions.com
