MusicsWeek: How did you get started in the music industry?
Nat Summer: I’ve been a musician for as long as I can remember myself. I began playing piano at the age of 6 and at 15 released my first album. Then I had a band for a few years, but back in the late 2000s we parted ways, and in 2018 I decided to relaunch my career.
MusicsWeek: What challenges did you face early in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Nat Summer: The biggest challenge was coming back to singing and songwriting after a pretty long break. But I kept a positive attitude and just focused on getting better. I also picked up a new musical instrument and started learning how to play guitar, and that alone felt like a breath of fresh air. Now I write my songs playing both, piano and guitar.
MusicsWeek: Who was your first major musical mentor, and what did you learn from them?
Nat Summer: To me, mentorship comes from life itself. At first, I thought of mentioning a couple of names, but then quickly realized, - everybody I’ve ever worked with contributed tremendously to my craft, and I am grateful to be surrounded by inspiring and talented people. I believe that any level of success requires support and encouragement, and I always learn from people in my life.
MusicsWeek: What’s the story behind your song 'Bye Bye Bye'?
Nat Summer: It was one of the first songs I wrote on my new guitar. It was a love song at first, then I put it away for some time, and suddenly it reappeared demanding something… It needed a bridge or a chorus… Then, as I began working on it, that phrase “Bye Bye Bye”, as it felt at the moment, kind of just wrote itself, and the whole song acquired a new meaning. It turned into a breakup song, which made total sense on an artistic, and also personal level.
MusicsWeek: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music?
Nat Summer: I love nature and use every opportunity to get away from the big city. I enjoy simple things in life, spending time with my family and friends. I used to be what one can describe as a “club kid”, and every now and then I still enjoy venturing out to dance, but usually that happens only when one of my DJ friends is spinning.
MusicsWeek: How do you balance your personal life with your music career?
Nat Summer: I meditate a lot, and always focus on the positive. I try not to take myself too seriously, and quickly forgive myself and others if something goes not quite as planned. I read, seek wisdom, and overall just look for wholeness, - there would be no need to balance if everything was interconnected, right?
MusicsWeek: What’s something about you that fans might be surprised to learn?
Nat Summer: I have a betta fish as a pet.
MusicsWeek: What’s the most significant change you’ve seen in yourself since starting your music career?
Nat Summer: Letting go of expectations. “Nothing’s ever what it seems”, - that’s actually a line from one of my songs. I’ve learned to be grateful for even the smallest things and take nothing for granted. I’m a huge fan of quantum physics and the idea of us creating our own reality. Before I viewed my career as some sort of a battle, you had to “make it”, while now I just stay in the now, knowing that whatever is meant to happen, eventually will.
MusicsWeek: What drives you to keep creating music even during challenging times?
Nat Summer: I do it because now I know that I don’t have a choice. During that long break, as I mentioned before, even though I really enjoy working in the film industry and modeling, eventually, and you can even say inevitably, I came back to writing songs. It is my lifeline.
MusicsWeek: What’s a personal achievement outside of music that you’re particularly proud of?
Nat Summer: Yoga every day. Trust me, that took a while!
