Artist Spotlight: Cam Ezell
This song is a culmination of many different experiences and relationships,” shares Ezell. “Sometimes you can enjoy a relationship while knowing it may not be healthy, putting you in an endless cycle with no growth, until you find yourself stuck, just spinning.
We sat down with Cam Ezell to talk about their creative journey, inspirations, and what’s next.
MusicsWeek: How did you get started in the music industry?
Cam Ezell: I got my start performing professionally when I was 13 in the Chicago theatre scene. I realized from an early age that I had a passion for music and knew I wanted to continue it in some form.
MusicsWeek: What challenges did you face early in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Cam Ezell: I would still consider myself early in my career, and I continuously feel challenged as an artist. There is so much great music in the world, and being a new artist can sometimes feel intimidating. I overcome these challenges by ensuring I stay authentic with myself as I create my music.
MusicsWeek: How do you stay motivated and inspired in your daily life?
Cam Ezell: I take time to do things I enjoy: hiking, creating music, working out. This helps me stay motivated and inspired.
MusicsWeek: How do you balance your personal life with your music career?
Cam Ezell:I hold myself to a strict schedule and block time out on my calendar for every aspect of my life. This includes time to write music, work out, relax, and hang out with friends.
MusicsWeek: Can you walk us through your typical songwriting process?
Cam Ezell: I always start with the lyrics. I am constantly thinking of ideas and jotting them down in the notes app on my phone. When I have free time, I sit down and try to give the ideas some structure. Once I have a structured set of lyrics, I come up with a raw melody that I take to my producer to help develop the song. This is a collaborative process that typically takes 3-4 weeks. Once I am satisfied with the production, I head to the studio to record my vocals. I work with the studio engineer to mix and master the song and prepare it for release.
MusicsWeek: Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics and melodies?
Cam Ezell: I am constantly listening to music and getting inspiration from other artists as well as life experiences. Many of my lyrics draw from my personal life. I try to develop melodies that best bring out the emotion of the lyrics.
MusicsWeek: Are there any particular tracks on your new project that hold special significance for you?
Cam Ezell: My newest single, Game of Roulette, is my take on modern dating, framing it around gambling in a casino. I love the vibe of Las Vegas--the big shows, the casinos, the nightlife--so this song was very fun for me to work on.
MusicsWeek: How do you feel your sound has evolved in this latest project compared to your earlier work?
Cam Ezell: My sound has gotten a bit more full and complex. My previous single was sort of a large experiment for me, and this new single shows much more maturity in the sound and the overall production.
MusicsWeek: What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received about your music?
Cam Ezell: "I can't stop listening to this song!" I write because I want people to feel something from my music, so repeat listeners are so meaningful to me!
MusicsWeek: How do you stay true to yourself while evolving as an artist?
Cam Ezell: I’m an avid listener, but when it’s time to create, I try to filter out external influences to focus on my own perspective. My goal is to produce music that resonates with me on a personal level first. I’ve found that when a creator is genuinely passionate about their work, that energy translates to the audience and builds a more meaningful connection.
